BOX SCORE ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped their second-straight game and fall to 4-4 on the season after a 58-54 loss to in-conference rival Saint Rose.
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) led the Charger's offense with 17 points on 8-16 shooting, while tallying eight rebounds and two assists. Graduate guard
Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) tied her season-high with 11 points in 11 minutes of play.
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) was held to only one made field goal, a three-pointer in the fourth quarter, but went 6-6 from the line. Junior forward
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden)Â totaled 4 points on 1-8 shooting while grabbing 11 rebounds in the loss. Fellow forward
Alyssa Stevenson (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) saw 24 minutes of action, racking up five points, three steals and eight rebounds, four of which were on offense.
Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) made her first start of the year for the Chargers, scoring three points off a shot from beyond the arc while recording two assists, a rebound and a steal.
The Golden Knights shot 20-55 (36.4%) from the field while making eight of 22 attempts from the three. Saint Rose also went 10-16 (62.5%) from the line, while the Chargers went 11-15 (73.3%). New Haven never led in the game after Saint Rose started off on an 8-0 run. New Haven forced Saint Rose into 18 turnovers, while totaling nine steals and one block led by Stevenson, who finished with three steals. DeBose is now 12th in the NE10 with 1.9 steals per game.
As a whole, the squad shot 19-58 (32.8%) from the field, while going 5-14 (35.7%) from beyond the arc. 20Â of New Haven's points came off turnovers while 18Â came on second chance opportunities. The Chargers were strong in the post, outscoring the Knights, 22-16, inside the paint while outrebounding Saint Rose, 41-35..
DeBose is still ranked seventh of all scorers in the conference with 16.1 points per game while Pergola fell to 17th with 12.4. Deshaies's 11.4 average rebounds puts her in sole possession of fourth in the NE10, while her 54.3 field goal percent ranks second amongst scorers. For the first time this season, Pergola was held to zero assists as she fell to 13th, averaging 2.9 assists per game.
FIRST HALF
- DeBose led New Haven scorers with seven points in the first half while recording two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
- Pergola was held without a made field goal, but went 4-4 from the line.
- Deshaies's only two points in the half came off free throws but racked up eight rebounds, three of which were on offense.
- Chambers ended the first half with eight points, all in the second quarter.
- Ocasio's one make came at 6:49 in the second quarter on a three-pointer, assisted by DeBose.
- Stevenson went 3-3 from the line while grabbing four rebounds, as well.
- Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) and Marigona Bacaliu (Worcester, Mass./Putnam Science Academy) each tallied a steal in the first quarter.
- Saint Rose jumped out to an 8-2 start before taking a 37-31 led at the half.
- New Haven shot 10-26 (32.4%) from the field while the Owls went 15-29 (51.7%).
- The Chargers were held to 2-6Â (33.3%) shooting from the perimeter, going 0-3Â in the first quarter.
- Saint Rose shot 7-13Â (53.8%) from three in the first half.
- The Knights didn't shoot a free thow in the first half but the Chargers went 9-12.
- The Chargers scored 6 points off turnovers in the first half, although none were on fast breaks.
- 12 of New Haven's points came from inside the paint, in addition to eight points on second chance opportunities.Â
SECOND HALF
- DeBose dominated the second half with 10 points, six rebounds, a block and an assist.
- Pergola wouldn't hit a field goal until 2:26 left in the game, draining a three-pointer off an assist from Ocasio.
- Deshaies was held without points but pulled in four rebounds, two on offense.
- Chambers finished with three points, a rebound and a steal, all in the fourth quarter.
- Bacaliu hit her only basket, a three-pointer off an assist from DeBose, with 3:58 left in the fourth.
- Stevensom finished with two points and three rebounds, all in the third quarter.
- New Haven outrebounded the Knights in the game, 41-35.
- New Haven shot 9-29 (31%) in the second half while the Golden Knights shot 5_26 (19.2%) from the field.
- The Chargers went 3-4 from the perimeter after going 0-4 in the third quarter while Saint Rose was held to 1-9 shooting from deep in the second half.
- The Knights went 10-16 (62.5%) from the line, while New Haven went two for three.
