DeBose's Big Night Not Enough as Chargers Drop Third Straight

WEST HAVEN, CONN. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped their third straight game and fall to 4-5 on the season, while remaining winless in conference play, after a 54-66 loss to the American International Yellow Jackets. Senior guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) had the hot hand for the Chargers, shooting 7-13 (53.8%) from the field with a four of those shots coming from long range. DeBose added four rebounds and two assists to her stat line, as well, to finish the night. Junior Forward Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) fell two points shy of a double-double, racking up 11 rebounds to go along with eight points. After another night of cleaning the glass, Deshaies extends her streak of 11+ rebounds to four games, as she has now hit that total seven times this season. Coming off the bench, Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) reached double-digits, tallying 10 points in the game, in addition to four boards and two assists. Despite being held to 0-4 from the three, Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) recorded six points while dishing out a total of five assists. Junior forward Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) finished the game with three points, four rebounds and two steals. Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy), Alyssa Stevenson (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) and Lyrik Jackson (Syracuse, N.Y./Syracuse Academy of Science) each totaled two points, with the latter two scoring on free throws. King and Stevenson were both in the starting lineup on Tuesday, each making their first starts of the season.

The Yellow Jackets shot 21-42 (50%) from the field while making five of 11 attempts from the three. This is the second time this season that an opponent has reached 50 percent shooting against the Chargers. Free throws were vital in the game as AIC went 19-24 (79.1%) from the line, while the Chargers went 11-23 (47.8%). New Haven forced AIC into 22 turnovers, while totaling a season-high 14 steals, in addition to two blocks. Led by a season-high four steals by DeBose, the Chargers scored 20 points off turnovers. Pergola and Chambers each racked up three steals while Van Cleaf recorded two. Deshaies and Stevenson were both credited with a block during the game.

As a whole, the squad shot 19-54 (35.2%) from the field, while going 5-24 (20.8%) from beyond the arc. New Haven outrebounded the Yellow Jackets, 35-31, and 14-3 on offensive rebounds. 26 of the Charger's points came from inside the paint while 12 points came on second chance opportunities.

FIRST HALF
  • DeBose led the Chargers with seven points in the first half, while grabbing a board in the process.
  • Chambers had five points, herself, while pulling down two rebounds.
  • Deshaies led the Charger's on the glass, totaling four rebounds, all in the second quarter.
  • DeBose, King, Marigona Bacaliu (Worcester, Mass./Putnam Science Academy) and Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) each pulled in one rebound.
  • Deshaies also added four points, all of which were in the first quarter, to her total at the half.
  • Pergola ended the half with four points, two of which on free throws, after going scoreless in the first quarter.
  • Pergola also dished out two assists, one in each quarter.
  • King and Van Cleaf rounded out the New Haven scorers with two points, each.
  • On defense, the Chargers racked up 10 steals in the first half of play with Pergola leading the way with three.
  • AIC shot 11-19 (57.9%) from the field in the half, including three of seven from the perimeter.
  • The Chargers went 10-28 (35.7%) while going two of 15 from three.
  • The Yellow Jackets shot 5-6 (83.3%) from the line as opposed to the Chargers who went 2-4 (50%).
  • Both teams scored 15 points off turnovers and 14 points in the paint.
  • Both teams also scored four points on the fast break during the first half.
SECOND HALF
  • DeBose exploded in the second half with 14 points, all of which were in the fourth quarter.
  • Contributing to her dominant quarter, DeBose burying three shots from beyond the arc.
  • Chambers added another five points to bring her total to 10 points.
  • Deshaies finished the second half with four points and seven rebounds.
  • Steveson and Jackson both scored two points after draining two shots from the line, each.
  • DeBose pulled in three rebounds while Chambers, Van Cleaf and Bacaliu each grabbed two.
  • Pergola tallied three assists while Chambers totaled two.
  • DeBose led on the defensive end as well, stealing the ball twice while Chambers and Stevenson each recorded one.
  • Both blocks for the Chargers came in the third quarter, as Deshaies and Stevenson each blocked a shot.
  • AIC shot 10-23 (57.9%) from the field in the half, including two of four from deep, while the Chargers went 9-26 (35.7%) while going three of nine from three.
  • The Yellow Jackets shot 14-18 (83.3%) from the line as opposed to the Chargers who went 9-19 (50%).
  • AIC scored eight points off turnovers while the Chargers scored five, all of which were in the third for both teams.
  • The Yellow Jackets outscored the Chargers in the paint, 14-12. 
  • The Chargers scored eight points on second chance opportunities during the second half.

WHAT'S NEXT
The University of New Haven women's basketball team will take a break before traveling to New Jersey for a rematch of the season-opener against the Bloomfield Bear. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 5:30 PM at Bloomfield College Gym on Friday, Dec. 17.
