Orangeburg, N.Y. - The first doubles pairing of graduate Ivana Andric (Griesheim, Germany) and senior Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) opened up 2021 with victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas' top doubles pairing as the University of New Haven women's tennis team dropped its opening match of the season 7-0.

Despite taking the top doubles victory the Chargers dropped the second and third doubles decisions, allowing STAC to earn the doubles point in the match. Andric also put up the biggest battle in singles play, falling 6-4, 6-3 to the Spartans Karina Blais.

The two teams also agreed to extend single and doubles play to allow for exhibition matches allowing a number of first-year Chargers to compete in their inaugural collegiate tennis match. Among those was Elena Miko (West Haven, Conn./Cheshire Academy), Abigail Murphy and Sydney Constantinidi (North Branford, Conn./North Branford).

Next up, the Blue and Gold will return home for the first time this season when they host the Adelphi Panthers. With temperatures forecasted to be in the low 40's, New Haven and Adelphi will meet at the Guilford Racquet Club with first serve set for 3:00 p.m.
