Skelly's Career High Pushes Women's Lacrosse Past Southern Connecticut in NE10 First Round

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Junior attack Marina Skelly (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) notched a career-high six goals Friday night as the No. 20 New Haven women's lacrosse team took down Southern Connecticut 14-6 in the first round of the NE10 Championships.

THE LEADERS
Skelly led a group of six players who reached the back of the net in the game, including sophomore Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) who finished with a hat-trick, her fifth of the season. Senior Mary Rishmany (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang) also contributed a pair of goals, followed by three players who each recorded a single score.

Junior Julia Astram (Milford, Conn./Milford) led the assist category for New Haven, finishing with three, just ahead of senior Emily Holland (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) who helped on a pair, and Skelly who tallied a single dime.

On defense, freshman Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier) finished with a team-high eight draw controls, followed by Acquavita who collected six. Graduate Raven Linton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Notre Dame) led the team with five ground balls on the evening, just ahead of a trio of Chargers who corralled three each. Between the pipes, freshman Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) stopped eight of the Owls 14 shots, for a .571 save percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Skelly opened the scoring for New Haven exactly 60 seconds into play with a free-position score to put her side up 1-0. Neither side would reach the back of the net for the next 10 minutes, before Bayleigh Takacs brought the Owls back level with 18:47 to play in the period.

Holland would counter just 30 seconds later with her only goal of the contest to spark a three goal run for the Chargers, with Skelly providing the other two. Southern Connecticut would get one back just before the break with a goal from Karlie Rowe with one second left, sending the two sides into halftime with the home team up 4-2.

Rishmany entered the scoring column just over three minutes into the second half, followed by Levitt's first of the evening just 24 seconds later to give the Blue and Gold a four goal cushion. Steph Seymour would score for the Owls a few minutes later, before a six goal run by the Chargers put the game out of reach. Of those six goals, Skelly would provide three, Acquavita two, and freshman Kyra Sparks (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) providing the sixth.

The two sides would trade goal for goal in the final 13 minutes, with Rishmany and Acquavita scoring one each for New Haven to seal a first-round victory over Southern Connecticut.
