Deshaies Shines but Chargers Fall to Assumption, 58-48

The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped their fifth straight game in a 58-48 loss to the Assumption Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon. The loss sends the Chargers to a 5-10 record on the season, including an 0-9 record during conference play. Junior forward Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) was a bright spot for the New Haven offense as she finished with a career-high 24 points on 11-16 shooting while pulling down 12 rebounds, four of which were on offense, for the double-double. Deshaies was also a force on the defensive end, as well, recording two steals and a block. This was Deshaies 10th game with double-digit rebounds and her fifth double-double of the season. DeBose just missed double-digit points as she finished with nine points on 4-14 shooting but managed to set a career-high in assists with five. Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) made her first career start for the Chargers, going 1-7 and draining a three pointer in the first quarter for her only made field goal. Alyssa Stevenson (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) also finished with three points, despite being held to 0-3 from the field, the junior forward went 3-8 from the line while pulling down nine rebounds. Junior guard Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) was held to 2-10 shooting, making one shot in each half, with a made three-pointer on her first attempt. King also tallied two assists and four rebounds. Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) went 1-3 in her nine minutes of play, finishing with two points and a +5 +/-, the only positive +/- for the Chargers.

The Greyhounds shot 20-51 (39.2%) from the field while making 6-16 (37.5%) shots from deep. The Chargers finished the game shooting 19-56 (33.9%) while being held to 3-17 (17.6%) from three. The Hounds went 12-16 (75.0%) from the line as opposed to the Chargers who went 7-14 (50.0%). New Haven forced Assumption into 20 turnovers, while totaling eight steals, in addition to two blocks. Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton), Chambers, King, and Stickle all recorded a steal while DeBose and Deshaies got two. Deshaies and Stevenson both tallied a block. The Greyhounds outrebounded the Chargers, 40-34, despite the Chargers outscoring them in the paint, 30-16. Assumption outscored the Chargers, 15-2, on the fast break but the Chargers outscored the Greyhounds 11-9 off turnovers. Assumption narrowly edged out New Haven in second chance points, 6-5.

FIRST HALF
  • Deshaies led all scorers in the first half with 12 points and five rebounds while shooting 5-7 from the floor.
  • DeBose shot 2-7 for a total of four points while tallying three assist amd four rebounds, as well.
  • Deshaies and DeBose both had a pair of offensive rebounds in the first half while Stevenson grabbed one.
  • Stevenson finished the half with two points on 2-6 shooting from the line, while missing her only attempted field goal.
  • King's only points in the half came from a corner three with 6:24 left in the first quarter, off an assist from DeBose.
  • Chambers went 1-3 from the field while recording a steal and an assist in her nine minutes of play.
  • Chambers was the only Charger to finish the first half with a positive +/- (5).
  • Stickle sunk a three-pointer off an assists from King with a minute left in the first quarter for her only made shot of the half.
  • Deshaies, DeBose and Chambers all tallied steals in the half while no Chargers were credited with blocks.
  • The Chargers ended the first quarter with an 18-15 lead but trailed at the half after a 20-8 run by the Greyhounds.
  • Assumption shot 13-28 (46.4%) from the field in the half, while being held to 3-9 from three.
  • The Chargers went 10-28 (35.7%) while going two of nine from beyond the arc.
  • The G'Hounds shot a perfect 6-6 from the line as opposed to the Chargers, who went 4-8.
  • Assumption outrebounded the Chargers, 20-15, but New Haven outscored them in the paint, 14-12.
  • Both teams scored six points a piece off of turnovers but Assumption outscored the Chargers, 6-2 on the fast break.
  • The Chargers were held to only one point on second chance opportunities while Assumption had four.
SECOND HALF
  • Deshaies continued to dominate the paint as she finished with another 12 points in the half to finish with a career-high 24.
  • Deshaies also pulled in seven rebounds, as well as recording a block and a steal.
  • Stevenson was held to one point on a free throw but racked up five boards.
  • Stevenson also tallied two assists in the second half to bring her to a career-high three in the game.
  • DeBose finished the second half with five points and two assists.
  • Ocasio drew a pair of timely charges but was handed a technical foul with a little over two minutes left of play.
  • King was held scoreless until an and-1 layup off an assist by Deshaies with a little over five minutes left.
  • Deshaies, DeBose, Stickle, King and Ocasio all were credited with a steal in the second half while both Deshaies and Stevenson recorded a block.
  • The Greyhounds shot 7-23 (30.4%) in the second half while going 3-7 from the perimeter.
  • The Chargers went 9-28 (32.1%) while being held to 1-8 from three.
  • The Greyhounds shot 6-10 from the line in the second half while the Chargers went 3-6.
  • Assumption narrowly edged out New Haven in rebounds, 20-19 but New Haven dominated the paint, 16-4.
  • The Chargers outscored the Hawks 5-3 off turnovers and 4-2 on second chance points.

The University of New Haven women's basketball team will stay at home as they host Southern New Hampshire on Jan. 25. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 5:30 P.M. on Tuesday at Charger Gymnasium
