SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The New Haven women's tennis team returned to dual match play for the first time in more than two days and began right where they left off, sweeping their American International Yellow Jackets 7-0. With the win, the Chargers improve to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
In the victory, a pair of Chargers picked up two points in the win with freshman Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) and sophomore Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) each earning a pair of victories, one as a doubles pair and one in singles action. The duo combined at No. 1 doubles to score a 6-3 win over their competition. Ferrarini then used a third-set tiebreaker to defeat her competition at No. 1 singles, with Carreras taking a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles.
Earning the other doubles victory on the day was senior Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) and freshman Madi Mabrito (Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas/Samuel V. Champion) who took down their No. 2 doubles opponent by a 6-2 margin.
The remaining two singles victories on the day came from senior Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) and junior Abby Murphy (Southington, Conn./Southington). Banks earned a straight-set win at No. 3 singles by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Murphy saw her win come at fourth singles by scores of 6-1, 6-3.
The women's tennis team will return to action on Sunday when they close out a weekend of back-to-back matches against Franklin Pierce in Rindge, N.H. First serve in the conference battle is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
