WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Just like they opened the week, the New Haven women's tennis team wrapped up its competition for the week and for the regular season with a 7-0 sweep of visiting Assumption on Friday under the lights. Prior to the match, the Chargers honored the three members of their senior class; Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta), Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) and Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown).
With the win, the Chargers improve to 8-4 overall and 6-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference and will now await the official announcement of the NE10 Championship bracket which will follow the conclusion of the regular season on Saturday. First round action will take place on Wednesday, October 19 with the top four teams in the standings all hosting in the opening round.
Following a sweep by Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) and Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) as No. 1 doubles, it took a little longer before the Chargers would secure the first point of the day with Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) and Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) earning the victory at No. 2 doubles by a 7-5 margin.
The Blue and Gold would see one more sweep on the evening, that from senior Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) as she completed a 2-0 night with a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 5 singles. Ferrarini, Carreras and Banks would all join her with a pair of victories on the day with Ferrarini and Carreras earning straight-set victories at first and second singles, respectively. Banks would be forced to a tiebreaker before earning her second point of the night.
Senior Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) also earned the victory on Senior Day, taking a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles, while Abby Murphy (Southington, Conn./Southington) earned a victory at sixth singles by way of forfeit.
