WEST HAVEN, CONN. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell to the Bentley Falcons, 1-0, to begin their final homestand of the season. Although they lost, the Chargers outshot the Falcons, 22-8, which is a season-high for New Haven. This was the most shots taken by the Chargers since the 21 shots they attempted in their 0-0 tie with American International on Sept. 17. The loss is New Haven's first loss to Bentley since a 1-0 defeat on Oct. 14, 2018.
The Chargers applied pressure to Bentley early as they outshot the Falcons, 13-2 (6-1 on goal), in the opening half.
Juan Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and
Guillem Barnils (Barcelona, Spain/Escola Pia Nostrasenyora) attempted four shots each while
Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands) and
Sean Lane-Turnbull (Wellington, New Zealand/Rongotai College) both took two shots.
Lucas Kaehr (Armonk, N.Y./Indiana University High School), who was the hero of the team's lone win over Le Moyne, also recorded a shot on target in the first half.
After a scoreless 45 minutes of play to start, the Falcons struck first in the 51st minute when junior forward Lukas Drahos found the right side of the net on a crossing shot from left of the goal. Drahos was assisted by senior midfielder Evan Levine, who found him after some fancy footwork in the box.
The Chargers tacked on another nine shot attempts in the second half, led by
Oskar Kvarnback (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium), who recorded four total shots. Freshman midfielder
Gavin Bravado (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) tied a season-high two shot attempts which he previously set in the draw with the American International Yellow Jackets.
Max La Rosa (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport), Gunnarsson and Kaehr all took a shot while the former of the three registered his first shot as a Charger.
In addition to outshooting the Falcons, 10-3 on goal, the Chargers also recorded more corner kicks in the contest, 5-1.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet) started between the post for New Haven, allowing one goal while tallying two saves. His 44 saves on the season are currently tied for fifth among all goalkeepers in the conference while his .710 save percentage ranks eighth.
