West Haven, Conn. - As the New Haven field hockey team took the field tonight, they put their undefeated record in conference play on the line once again, with an opponent who also remained undefeated. Since the beginning of the field hockey program at New Haven, the aspirations were big, and each year history continued to be made. In the last match up against the Greyhounds the Chargers made history by netting their first goal against Assumption. Tonight, the Chargers made history once again by taking home a win against the Greyhounds under the lights on DellaCamera Field with a 2-1 overtime decision.
The last matchup against Assumption came to a decision late in the game, with the Greyhounds taking home the win with a score of 2-1. With the last game in mind, both teams started off the game with high offensive pressure, but the Greyhounds were able to find the back of the net first in the fourth minute of the game. Chloe Kaellar after a scramble in front of the net, was able to collect the first goal for the Greyhounds. In total, the Greyhounds forced 14 shots, 11 which were on goal.
Trailing the Chargers continued to push the offensive, it was not until the 36th minute with a goal from graduate Sophie Schreck (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) that would tie up the game. Schreck with pressure from all angles, was able to beat multiple Assumption players, bringing the ball into the circle. With a quick pull to her left, Schreck off balance wound up for the reverse shot, which found the backboard hard for the equalizer.
Both teams pushing to find a goal, were met with intense defensive pressure on both ends, leading to overtime play. Battling to find the game winner, the Chargers pushed the ball up the field into Assumption's defensive end, where sophomore Sophia Ruh (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) would be met with pressure from the backfield. With one on, Ruh was able to find a shot and with just four minutes remaining in the first overtime period, that straight shot would find its way past the reach of Assumption goalkeeper Kylie Gargulo and into the righthand corner for a Chargers win.
The Chargers totaled 10 shots on the night, six of which would make their way on goal. Graduate goalkeeper Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford), looking strong in net would lead the way defensively for the Chargers, making a total of 10 saves, including a diving save to keep the score 1-1 in the fourth quarter.
With that win the Chargers will continue to look for an undefeated record in the Northeast-10 conference, as they take on cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State, on Wednesday October 19th. That game is scheduled for a start time of 7:00 p.m. under the lights on DellaCamera field. All the action will be available on the Chargers Sports Network on NE10 NOW.
