Field Hockey Drops Road Decision at St. Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, N.Y. - The New Haven Chargers field hockey team headed to the Empire State for their second straight road matchup, following a tough overtime loss to Southern New Hampshire. After four quarters of play the Chargers fell to the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas with a score of 4-2.

Despite being limited for much of the afternoon, New Haven took advantage of as many of the opportunities as possible, finding the back of the cage on two of its four shots on goal. Junior Audrey Larson (Gilroy, Calif./Gilroy) would net her second goal of the season followed by a first career goal from Freshman Bryanna Courneen. Aside from Larson's goal she also tallied up an assist, alongside Sophie Schreck (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) gathering her fourth assist of the season.

An all-out performance by the Charger defense limited the Spartans throughout the first half of play, where the Spartans outshoot New Haven, 15-4. Graduate goalkeeper Kierra Integlia made seven total saves for the Chargers throughout the afternoon.

St. Thomas Aquinas remained scoreless throughout the first half of the game, but found the backboard in the 36th minute, setting the tone of the second half. The Spartans would continue to add one more goal shortly after in the third quarter of play, followed by two more tallies to finish off with four goals on the afternoon.

Shortly after the Spartans pushed their lead to 2-0, Larson put home a ball when there was a scrum in front of the goal with a scramble between Larson and Schreck. Schreck able to get the ball to the corner of the goal, and Larson sending it to the backboard.

With just 45 seconds left to play, Courneen would pot her first career goal, when a shot from sophomore Johanna Lee tipped off the left side of the goalkeeper's pads. With both a Spartan defender fighting to keep it off the line, and Courneen pushing for the goal, the ball found its way past the line for the Chargers last goal of the game. The Chargers would continue to push the offensive, however, their efforts were not enough as the Spartans saw out the 4-2 victory.

The Chargers will return to home turf play on DellaCamera this weekend, on Saturday, October 29th. As they meet the Panthers of Adelphi once again, this time for a conference game with a start time of 1:00 p.m. All the action will be available on the Chargers Sports Network on NE10 NOW.
