Volleyball Drops Tough Home Match to Adelphi

WEST HAVEN, Conn –  Back at home and in the heart of their conference schedule, the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team welcomes the Adelphi Panthers for a Tuesday night match before the team returns back to the road with the postseason in sight. After a back to back match week playing the Falcons of Bentley followed by the Ravens of Franklin Pierce, the Chargers got two days off before the match against the Panthers in front of their home crowd returning from fall break.

Series History

In the all time history of these two teams meeting, the Chargers hold the edge 29-7 and enter the contest riding a two match win streak over the Panthers. In the past two meetings New Haven has won 3-1 in 2021 at Adelphi and then beat the Panthers at Charger Gymnasium in 2019 3-1. Adelphi has not beaten the Chargers at Charger Gymnasium since 2015. The Chargers look to improve their win streak on the season to two matches and their streak over the Panthers to three and it all came down to tip off at Charger Gymnasium.

Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) opened up the scoring for New Haven in the first set with a kill off the set from Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) putting the blue and gold on the board. Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) added her name to the scoring sheet with a kill of her own following an error by the Panthers to tie the match up before Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) put the Chargers out in front for the first time. The lead went back to the blue and gold after an error again by Adelphi but it was the Panthers taking the lead off of a streak of six forcing Christa Cooper to call an early first timeout. Out of the break Adelphi scored first but Johnson quickly responded with her second kill of the set before the Chargers leading scorer, Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) found herself with open court in front of her and finished her first kill of the night and cut into the lead of the Panthers. Brown, who had been quite  early, showed why she was the NE10's leader in kills per set (3.63) and kills (287) entering the night, with back to back kills and cutting the lead to four. Brown picked up her fourth kill an Adelphi point later and New Haven capitalized on an attacking error by the Panthers to make it a six point set before calling their second timeout of the set. After the break, Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) entered for her first appearance of the night and picked up a kill but just before the Panthers closed out the opening set to win 25-12 and go up 1-0. Brown got the Chargers on the board in the second set with a kill and New Haven doubled that up, capitalizing on an error by the Panthers to make it a one point match. Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) added to the stat sheet with her first kill of the night cutting the deficit to one. Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School), like she did in the first, entered as a sub and made an immediate impact picking up a kill before Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) added her second ace to tie that match and Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) leveled things again at six again with her kill. The Chargers put the pressure on late with Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) adding yet another kill and capitalizing on errors by Adelphi, but the Panthers closed out the second set on a bad set by New Haven and went up 2-0 on the 25-18 set win. After trailing most of the first two sets, the Chargers flipped the switch in the third with the pressure on them and took the early lead with their first point coming from none other than Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) who was leading the Chargers in both kills and digs. Browns kill and errors by Adelphi gave the lead to New Haven that grew to as many as five at points and came to ties three times, but the Chargers never gave up the lead throughout the set and coming out of their final timeout Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) brought the set to set point off her kill and off Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers)s serve the Panthers committed a setting error to lock up the third set win for the Chargers 25-23 and making the match 2-1. After extending the match to the fourth the blue and gold came out hot off the hand of Brown just as they did throughout the match. The Chargers carried the momentum from their third set win and kept the lead with kills from Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) and Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School). Late in the set, the Panthers began to pull away but a scoring streak that included kills from Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) along with a bad set by the Panthers forced an Adelphi timeout in a two point set. The two sides traded points down the stretch but it was Adelphi closing the set out with back to back points to take the set 25-19 and 3-1. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led the way with a double double of 15 kills and 18 digs, as Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) added 31 assists and 2 aces with Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) adding in nine kills.
