Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Rally Not Enough as Chargers Fall to Assumption 2-1

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A late second half goal from senior Madison Blonde (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) cut the deficit in half and heavy pressure down the stretch came close, but the New Haven women's soccer team couldn't pull out the comeback as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the visiting Assumption Greyhounds on Saturday night.

The Greyhounds put both of their goals on the board in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead into the halftime break. Both teams finished the opening 45 minutes evenly matched at five shots apiece with New Haven forcing the Greyhounds keeper to make three saves. On the opposite end of the field, Chargers keeper Amanda McQuillan (Meath, Ireland/) started the contest with two first half stops.

The second half saw a much faster tempo for both teams as the two squads combined for 25 total shots, 12 of which came from Assumption with the Chargers holding the Greyhounds off the scoreboard in the final 45 minutes. During that stretch, McQuillan added five more saves, closing out the contest with seven total.

Blonde's goal came in the 82nd minute as the Chargers stepped up their pressure late to make a push toward a come-from-behind victory. She would work together with freshman Riley Drosopoulos (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) who found Blonde on the left side of the box. Blonde would elude one defender and push a soft shot to the near corner, notching her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

New Haven will return to the pitch when they head to Colchester, Vt. to take on the Saint Michael's Purple Knights on Wednesday, October 12 with opening kickoff from Duffy Field set for 3:30 p.m.
