WALTHAM, Mass. – The University of New Haven field hockey team has clinched a spot in the semi-final round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship for the second year in a row, once again with a win against the Falcons of Bentley. The sixth seeded Chargers clinched the win in the second overtime over the third seeded Falcons.
In the first quarter, a majority of the action was played in the midfield by both teams, as neither was able to establish a solid offense. New Haven was unable to find a solid shot, however the Chargers defense was able to keep Bentley off the board as they found two shots throughout the first quarter.
The Chargers found their grove in the second quarter, finally finding the offensive and pushing to find two shots in the zone, but Falcon's goalkeeper Mia Trottie was able to keep New Haven off the board.
In the third quarter, the play continued to remain equal. It would not be until the third quarter when sophomore Abby Nixon (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip Regional) would draw a penalty corner for the Chargers, and a straight shot from sophomore Kelli Jacobson (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) would find the backboard. However, the referees would call that goal back and the game would continue 0-0 into overtime play.
As the first overtime period passed and the second overtime began, the Chargers seemed to contain their composure, moving the ball up and down the field. It would not be until the 75th minute where the Chargers would once again find a penalty corner in the Falcon's defensive end, giving the Chargers another scoring opportunity. Sophomore Sophia Ruh (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) would insert the ball to the top of the circle, finding sophomore Olivia Chase (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), who would pass to her left to senior Katie Durkee (Salem, Conn./East Lyme). Durkee with a strong pass into the middle of the circle, freshman Erin Smith (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) found her way behind a defender, tipping the ball right past the pads of Falcon goalkeeper Trottie, for the game winner.
The Chargers would tally up a total of eight shots on the evening, five of which would find their way on goal, as well as collecting five penalty corners. Chargers' goalkeeper Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford) made a total of four saves, to help boost the Chargers to a win.
The Chargers will now advance to the semi-final round of championship play, this one scheduled to come back to the Charger's home turf, DellaCamera Stadium. That game will occur on Friday, November 18th, with a start time to be determined. All the action will be available on the Chargers Sports Network on NE10 NOW.
