ALBANY, N.Y. - Hitting the road for the second time this season, the University of New Haven men's basketball won their second-straight game after defeating the Saint Rose Golden Knights, 69-65, in overtime on Tuesday night. In a game that saw five lead changes and took longer than 40 minutes to be decided, the Chargers erased a nine point shortfall halfway through the second half to win their third-straight game over Saint Rose.
Led by
Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) and
Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie), the Chargers jumped out to an early 12-4 lead after five minutes of play in the first quarter. Perry scored on his first three shot attempts while Thomas drained a three-pointer on an assist from
Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./), who would set up an and-1 opportunity for Thomas less than a minute later by grabbing an offensive rebound. The Golden Knights cut into the deficit with a three-pointer but a heads up play on defense from Perry led to a fast break dunk.
The Golden Knights went on a 15-9 run to take the lead while Perry scored on three straight attempts after missing two shots prior in that span, starting off 7-9 from the field. After a Saint Rose lay-up put the Golden Knights up by six, Thomas cut it back to one possession by draining a three-pointer, his second off the game, on an assist from
Kendall McMillan (Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph), who made his season debut.Â
Joshua Hopson (Jersey City, N.J./MacDuffie School)Â made his only shot of the night, a lay-up off a smooth feed from Perry, before the latter split a pair of free throws to make it a two-point game. The senior guard capped of an explosive first half by draining a jumper with 45 seconds left to tie the game at 29 a piece.
Perry led New Haven in the first half with 17 points, two rebounds and an assist while Thomas went into the break with nine points. Only two other Chargers scored in the first half, Hopson on a lay-up at 3:22 and sixth man
Sean Braithwaite (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches), who split a pair of free throws at 10:56. Despite starting the game 2-8 from beyond the arc, New Haven ended the opening half with a 48 shooting percentage after hitting 12 of their 25 attempts.Â
Saint Rose opened the second half with a jumper in the paint but
Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School), who was the star of last weekend's game, answered with a lay-up after a Majak block on the other end. Following a a Golden Knights' three-pointer,
Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) put up his first score of the game, converting an and-1 opportunity, to tie the game at 34.Â
Down by three with a little over 16 minutes left in the game, Olawoye misfired from beyond the arc but Majak was there for the put back dunk. Saint Rose caught fire from the perimeter, draining back-to-back threes, giving them their largest lead of the night, with 10 minutes to go.
A pair of jumpers from Perry, one of which resulted in a made free throw after, cut it to a six point deficit before Lane scored in the paint to make it a 52-56 game. Majak pulled down another offensive board after a miss from Olawoye before Lane hit again on the second chance opportunity. Perry threw it up and Majak threw it down with two and a half minutes left for the equalizing basket.
Lane put the Chargers out in front on shot in the paint with 36 seconds before Thomas went 1-2 at the line for a three-point lead. After initially missing the game-tying three-pointer, an offensive rebound from Saint Rose allowed for one final shot, another three-pointer to send the game to overtime.
Saint Rose scored first in overtime on a lay-up but Lane was once again rewarded an and-1 after he was fouled on a successful lay-up. Entering overtime shooting 1-10, Olawoye scored on a crucial lay-up with two and half minutes to put the team up by three. The Golden Knights answered with a two-point jumper to cut it to one point but Lane came up clutch with a last-second lay-up on a feed from Thomas for the dagger. Olawoye sealed the 6-65 victory with a steal before splitting a pair of free throws.Â
New Haven remained efficient on offense, finishing the game shooting 29-59 (49.2 percent). Despite a season-low 2-19 (10.5 percent) from beyond the arc, the Chargers' defense held the Golden Knights to 26-70 (37.1 percent) including 9-36 (25 percent) from deep. Perhaps the difference maker came at the free throw line where New Haven drew 14 attempts, sinking nine of them, while Saint Rose made all four of their attempts. The Chargers recorded two blocks and eight steals on their way to forcing 21 turnovers. New Haven dominated the paint once again, outscoring the Golden Knights 42-32, but for the first time this season, the Chargers were outrebounded, 38-36.
Now 1-1 on the road (2-1 overall), the University of New Haven men's basketball team will stay on the road to take on the IUP for the second of a three-game road trip. Tip-off against the Crimson Hawks is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex on Saturday, Nov. 26.Â
