Debose Drops 1,000th Point, Chargers Take 79-51 Win Over Franklin Pierce

WEST HAVEN, Conn. Graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) made history, scoring her 1,000th career point as part of a team-high 22 points to lead the New Haven women's basketball team to a 28-point, 79-51, win over the Franklin Pierce Ravens on Saturday at Charger Gymnasium. With the win, the Chargers improve to 4-2 on the year and 2-2 in the Northeast-10 and remain unbeaten on their home court (4-0).

DeBose was one of three players to finish in double digits for the Chargers with senior Brian Van Cleaf following her with a season-high 17 points as she finished the game shooting 7-of-9 from the field with three of those buckets from outside the three-point arc. Rounding out the leading scorers was senior Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) who finished with 12, extending her current streak of double figure games to six.

"I am very proud of our team's energy for the full 40 minutes today," said head coach Deborah Buff. "We followed the game plan and were very disciplined. Briana [Van Cleaf] and Cam [DeBose] were outstanding today. We talked about playing defense with urgency and it showed. Congrats to Cam on scoring her 1,000th career point."

As a team, New Haven finished the day shooting 53.3 percent from the field, 32-of-60, including eight long range buckets. The Chargers shot over 40 percent in all three quarters, including a game-best 81.8 percent in the fourth quarter alone, connecting on all but two of their 11 attempts from the field.

New Haven will head back on the road for its next two games, stepping away from Northeast-10 play on Tuesday night when they travel to the Park City for the I-95 showdown against the Bridgeport Purple Knights. Tipoff from Harvey Hubbel Gymnasium is set for 7:00 p.m.

FIRST QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        After allowing two buckets from the Ravens to open the game, DeBose went back-to-back for the first UNH points. She opened up scoring a triple then followed with a fast break bucket off a rebound for the first and only needed lead change of the day.

·        The five points from DeBose began a 16-0 run for the Chargers as they took a 12-point lead before the Ravens were able to break that rally with 2:02 remaining in the quarter.

·        Graduate transfer Leighanna Lister (Kutztown, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) grabbed the board and scored a putback layup as time expired in the opening frame to provide a 12-point margin at the intermission with that lead matching the largest to that point.

·        Defensively, the Chargers held Franklin Pierce to just three field goals in the first quarter as they shot just 23.1 percent from the field.

SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        After a jumper from Deshaies opened up the second quarter just nine seconds into the action, the Ravens went on an 8-0 run that included back-to-back three pointers to cut the New Haven lead down to six less than 90 seconds into the action.

·        The Ravens would manage to cut their deficit to as little as four, 24-20, with 6:15 to play before the half, however the Chargers responded by scoring seven straight to regain a double digit lead at 31-20.

·        A three pointer from Debose, thanks to the assist from Van Cleaf, with 3:43 remaining would match that 11 point lead at 34-23.

·        Overall, Debose would score the final eight points of the half for the Chargers with her three pointer with 41 seconds remaining giving the Charger a 14 point lead and propelling her into the 1,000 point club. Credit Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) with the assist on that record setting bucket.

·        Overall, DeBose finished the second quarter with 10 points to lead all scorers.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES

·        After trading the first 11 points of the quarter, the Chargers sandwiched a layup from Lister with three pointers from Van Cleaf, the second of which led to an 18-point New Haven lead just inside the five-minute mark and forcing the Ravens to call timeout.

·        The Ravens would muster just three more points for the remainder of the period as New Haven took a 19-point lead into the final intermission with that advantage coming thanks to a fast break steal and layup from DeBose with 14 seconds remaining.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES

·        King would again provide a great look, this time around using a bounce bass down the middle of the lane that found a cutting Van Cleaf as she drove the baseline and opened the fourth quarter with a layup.

·        The biggest story of the quarter for the Chargers was their points off turnovers as the Blue and Gold forced the Ravens into eight turnovers and scored 10 points off of those mistakes. Included were three straight POT buckets from King, DeBose and Van Cleaf.

·        New Haven opened up the fourth quarter with a 7-1 run which led to a 26-point lead and forced the Ravens into a full line-change substitution.

·        Another steal and bucket from DeBose with 5:40 remaining in the game provided the Chargers with a 28-point lead, their largest of the game, which they matched at the final buzzer courtesy of a pair of free throws from Brianna Diaz (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) that came inside the final minute.
