WEST HAVEN, CONN. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team started the game off hot but ultimately fell to the Southern New Hampshire Penmen, 50-62, on Thursday night at Charger Gymnasium. The loss drops New Haven to 7-13 on the season, as well as 2-12 in conference play. Led by
Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy), who had five first quarter points, New Haven picked up where they left off, shooting 6-10 from the field while only trailing by two going into the second quarter. The Penmen would not falter as they held on to outscore New Haven 34-18 in the second and third quarters while the Chargers ended the game on a 19-13 run.
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) led the offense, shooting 6-13 from the field including 3-4 from beyond the arc to finish with 15 points. The graduate guard also tallied two assists in the loss as she now ranks seventh with 3.1 assists per game.
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) put up 10 points on 5-8 shooting but fell short of a double-double, grabbing only eight rebounds, three of which were on offense. Although the junior forward failed to reach her average, she has pulled down 11 or more rebounds in 12 of the 19 games she has played in as she averages 10.7 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. The latter ranks third in the conference while she also places second shooting 52 percent from the field. After scoring five points in the first quarter, Van Cleaf finished the game with nine on 4-9 shooting while recording six rebounds and two assists, as well. Despite being held to 2-11 shooting and five points,
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) was still her dominant self on defense, tallying seven steals while also grabbing five rebounds, three of which were on offense. DeBose still ranks within the top ten of NE10 scorers with an average of 14.1 points per game. After dropping a career-high 25 points last game,
Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) only attempted four shots, draining a three in her lone make, to finish with five points. The junior guard also recorded three rebounds and three assists.
Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) was held to one made field goal while splitting a pair of free throws to finish with three points. Rounding out the scorers is freshman forward
Bianca Pendleton (Accokeek, Md./New Hope Academy) who totaled three points in the game, all of which came at the line.
The Penmen went 22-52 (42.3%) shooting from the field and 8-20 (40.0%) from behind the perimeter. The Chargers ended the game shooting 19-58 (32.8%) while going 5-18 (27.8%) on three-point attempts. SHNU shot 10-14 (71.4%) from the line as opposed to New Haven, who went 7-10 (70.0%). New Haven forced the Penmen into 24 turnovers with DeBose and King leading the defense with the latter recording three steals. DeBose, who came one steal shy of tying her career-high, has now managed a steal in 14 consecutive games.
The Chargers turned those turnovers into 15 points on the other end while Southern New Hampshire scored 12 points off of turnovers. The Chargers were outrebounded by the Penmen, 35-39 depite both teams scoring 22 points in the paint. SHNU scored six points on second chance opportunities while New Haven scored ten.
FIRST HALF
- The Chargers started the game hot, shooting 6-10 (60.0%) from the field in the first quarter.
- Pergola and Deshaies both finished the first half with six points.
- Van Cleaf was held to five points, all in the first quarter.
- King made her one field goal attempt, a three-pointer in the second quarter while grabbing three rebounds.
- Stickle made one of her two shots to finish with two points in the half.
- DeBose split a pair of free throws to end the half with one point.
- DeBose led all Chargers in rebounds with four, two of which were on offense.
- DeBose, King, Pergola and Alyssa Stevenson (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) all tallied assists.
- The Chargers had their biggest lead of the game (4) with 3:52 in the first quarter.
- New Haven shot 4-15 (26.7%) in the second quarter and 10-25 (40.0%) in the first half.
- The Chargers were held to two three-pointers in the half, one in each quarter, as Van Cleaf and King each hit one
- The squad edged out SHNU 17-12 on the boards in the first half.
- DeBose recorded four steals while Deshaies, Pergola and Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) were all credited with one.
- SHNU shot 14-26 (53.8%) from the field while going 4-13 (30.8%) from three.
- New Haven shot 1-2 (50.0%) from the line while Southern New Hampshire went 2-4 (50.0%).
- The Chargers scored three points off of turnovers as opposed to the Penmen who scored 10.
- New Haven scored seven points on second chnce opportunities while the Penmen were held to zero.
- The Chargers forced nine turnovers while being forced into 13, themselves.
SECOND HALF
- Pergola dominated the second half for the second-straight game, scoring nine points on 3-8 shooting with all made field goals coming from beyond the arc.
- Deshaies scored four points on 2-4 shooting while grabbing six rebounds.
- DeBose also scored four points while tallying an assist and a rebound.
- Van Cleaf recorded four points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the second half.
- King was held to two points, both from the line, while assisting on two baskets.
- Pendleton put up three points in the fourth quarter, all from the line.
- Stevenson was held scoreless but pulled in three second half rebounds.
- DeBose led the defense with three steals while Deshaies and Van Cleaf recorded two.
- SHNU outscored the Chargers 15-8 in the third but the Chargers outscored the Penmen in the fourth, 19-13.
- Southern New Hampshire shot 8-26 (30.8%) from the field and 4-7 (57.1%) from beyond the arc.
- New Haven went 9-33 (27.3%)) including a 6-15 (40.0%) fourth quarter while shooting 3-12 (25.0%) from three.
