Women's Basketball Comes up Short Against Bentley, 48-75 in NE10 Championship First Round

WALTHAM, MA. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team's season will come to an end after falling to the Bentley Falcons, 75-48 in the first round of the NE10 Championship. The postseason loss comes after concluding the season with a 10-15 record (5-14 in NE10). The Chargers were led by Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden), who ended the regular season on a tear, as she finished the game with a 14 point-13 rebound double-double. Deshaies shot 7-11 (63.6%) from the floor after ranking second in the conference with a 54.2 shooting percentage. After racking up 70 points and 49 rebounds across the team's final three games on the year, the junior forward averaged 12.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. Graduate guard Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) also saw double-digits for the Chargers, scoring 12 points on 5-10 (50.0%) shooting. Even without a dish tonight, Pergola placed tenth in the NE10 with an average of 3.0 assists per game. Despite being held to 1-10 shooting, her lone make coming from beyond the arc, Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) grabbed seven boards while also assisting on a shot. Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) was also kept to one made field goal, her only shot coming inside the perimeter. The junior guard was also held with a rebound but tallied four assists in the loss. Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) was held to her second-lowest scoring output of the season, putting up just four points for the Chargers as well as a single rebound. The senior guard recorded a steal which extends her streak to 20 games straight one or more steals. DeBose ranked 16th amongst NE10 scorers this season, ending the regular season with 13.0 points per game. Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) put up eight points off the bench on 4-10 shooting while grabbing five rebounds, three of which came on the offensive side. Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) drained a three-pointer in the fourth quarter for her only points of the afternoon. Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) made her only attempted shot, an unassisted jumper with 1:01 left in the third quarter.

The Falcons ended with 25-55 (45.5%) shooting from the field while going 8-18 (44.4%) from behind the perimeter. The Chargers ended the game shooting 22-57 (38.6%) while being held to 2-13  (15.4%) on three-point attempts. At the line, the Chargers converted 2 of 7 attempts whereas the Falcons shot 17-19. New Haven forced Bentley into 16 turnovers as six Chargers recorded a steal with Chambers and Pergola leading the defense with two steals while Deshaies blocked two shots.

The Chargers turned those turnovers into 17 points on the other end while Bentley scored 20 points off of turnovers. New Haven was outrebounded by the Falcons, 32-37 despite outscoring them in the paint, 32-28. The Chargers outscored Bentley on second chance opportunities, 6-4.

FIRST HALF
  • New Haven started slow, trailing at the half, 17-41.
  • Deshaies racked up ten rebounds in the first half while adding six points on 3-4 shooting.
  • Deshaies also assisted on a King layup 2:45 into the game.
  • The layup was King's only points in the contest.
  • King also tallied two assists, both of which came in the first quarter.
  • Stickle also recorded two assists in the half with both coming in the second quarter.
  • Chambers shot 2-5 from the bench to finish the opening half with four points.
  • Chambers also grabbed three rebounds in her time on the court.
  • Van Cleaf drained a three-pointer off an assist from Stickle with 6:48 left in the second.
  • Despite being held to one make, Van Cleaf also pulled down five rebounds in the half.
  • Pergola was also held to one first half field goal as she finished with two after two quarters.
  • Marigona Bacaliu (Worcester, Mass./Putnam Science Academy) and Charlotte Bassett (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) each pulled in a defensive rebound in the second quarter.
  • Bacaliu and Chambers each recorded a steal while Deshaies blocked a shot in the first quarter.
  • New Haven shot 8-30 (26.7%) from the field while only making one of six shots from beyond the arc.
  • Bentley made 14 of 32 (43.8%) shots in the half while going 6-14 (87.5%) from deep.
  • At the line, the Chargers couldn't convert an attempt as they went 0-3 whereas the Falcons went 7-8 (87.5%) from the line.
  • The Falcons forced the Chargers into 10 first half turnovers while New Haven only forced four.
  • Bentley scored 17 points off turnovers while the Chargers only scored two.
  • Bentley edged out the Chargers on the boards, 22-21 despite New Haven grabbing more offensive rebounds, 6-4.
  • The Chargers outscored the Falcons on second chance opportunities, 4-2.
  • Both teams scored 12 points in the paint during the first half.
SECOND HALF
  • New Haven had a bounce back second half scoring 31 points across the two quarters despite being outscored 31-34.
  • Pergola led the team's second half charge with 10 points, eight of which came in the third quarter, on 4-6 shooting.
  • Deshaies scored eight points on 4-7 shooting while only grabbing three rebounds.
  • The junior forward also recorded a steal and a block in the third quarter.
  • Stickle made her only attempted shot, an unassisted jumper with 1:01 left in the third quarter.
  • Chambers shot 2-5 to total four second half points to go along with two rebounds  
  • Van Cleaf tallied a rebound while King recorded an assist.
  • Ocasio burried a three-pointer to go with two rebounds and two assists in the fourth quarter.
  • The Chargers shot 14-27 (51.8%) while being held to 1-7 (14.3%) from beyond the arc.
  • Bentley went 11-23 (47.8%) from the field while making two of ther four three-point attempts.
  • New Haven went 2-4 from the line whereas Bentley went 10-11 (91.0%).
  • Bentley outrebounded the Chargers 11-15 despite th Chargers outscoring them 20-16 in the paint.
  • The Chargers scored 15 points off turnovers while the Falcons only scored three.
  • Both teams scored four points on second chance opportunities.
