WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Women's tennis ended their spring campaign on a high note, with a 5-2 win over Division I opponent Holy Cross. The Chargers had a powerful performance in the doubles, sweeping the courts. Strong performances overall in the singles also helped boost New Haven, as the team ends their 2021-2022 season at exactly .500 in both conference and overall play.
The Chargers recorded a winning sweep in the doubles, led by Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) and Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown). The junior duo not only took the win, but shutout their competition in the No. 3 doubles. It was the last doubles match in the Blue and Gold uniforms for the No. 2 doubles pair of senior Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) and graduate student Gaayatri Shankar (Kochi, India/TocH Public School). The pair took the match 6-3. Also taking the win in her last collegiate match was Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) with freshman teammate Karim Carerras. The No. 1 doubles pairing defeated the Crusaders in a tight match, 6-4. Rodriguez ended her five year campaign as a Charger with a win on the home courts.
Carerras led off the singles with a win in the No. 1 pairing. The freshman took the first set 6-1, then fought off Holy Cross to take the individual win in the second set 7-5. Mika wasn't just done after the doubles, the senior won the No. 3 matchup, with a score of 6-2 in the first set and 6-4 in the second; recording her last match in the win column as well.
Banks won a long, three set match in the No. 4 singles. The junior took the first set in extras 7-5, then lost the second 6-1, allotting a third set. Banks fought a tight match but ended up with the individual victory, with a score 10-8 in the third. Orlando and Abby Murphy (Southington, Conn./Southington) had strong performances in the No. 5 and No. 6 matches respectively. Over the course of two sets, Murphy only let up three points to her Crusader opponent, while Orlando only let up four.
