After making it past the quarterfinals last season to Southern Connecticut State University, the New Haven Chargers women's lacrosse postseason run was cut short this time around as they fell 18-8 to the Stonehill Skyhawks in the school's first meeting outside the regular season.
How it Happened
In the entirety of the 60-minute competition, there was not one point in time where the New Haven Chargers went even or surpassed the Skyhawks in scoring. The closest the Blue and Gold got was within one goal, which only happened within the first two quarters.
Starting with the first draw, which was won by the Skyhawks, they were able to score on the first possession after only 0:17. The Chargers attempted only two shots before Stonehill made their way on the scoreboard again.
Raegan Bailey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire), the Chargers leader in goals this season, had her first to cut New Haven's deficit from two to one after receiving the pass from Mary Rishmany (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang). But the Stonehill lead was extended back to two when the Skyhawks scored man-up following a yellow card on Justine Doyle (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy).
Back in the circle, Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) won the draw and forced play into the scoring third where Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) scored her 38th goal of the season. Retaliating again, Stonehill scored on their following possession. Cutting the deficit once again was Acquavita scoring with 2:33 to go but the Skyhawks slipped another one past Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) to end the quarter 5-3 with the lead in favor of Stonehill.
In the second quarter, Acquavita broke out again scoring for the Chargers off a free position attempt. But Stonehill went on a 3-0 run, which ended when Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier) and Bailey scored back to back with only a minute remaining until halftime leaving the Chargers short of two, 8-6.
With only four shots in the third quarter, the Chargers scored on two; one from Bailey and one from Rishmany. However, Stonehill shot 11 towards the net connecting on six.
With 15:00 remaining and the Blue and Gold down six, the Chargers were held scoreless and only had only four attempted shots. Stonehill found a way to add four more goals to their score eliminating New Haven from further NE10 competition.
