SPARKILL, N.Y. – The New Haven women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 road decision at Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday, evening its record at 1-1 on the season before making their home court debut this coming Friday.
STAC opened up the day winning the doubles point, with Elita Silins and Jemima Parkinson securing the win with the second doubles victory which came against freshmen Lucia Placidi (Melbourne, Australia/Distance Education Centre Victoria) and Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) 6-4.
Ferrarini would also put up an impressive fight in singles action, forcing a tiebreak set against her opponent, Victoria Pavlovets, at No. 2 singles. Ferrarini took the first set by a 7-5 decision, before Pavlovets evened the match taking the second set 6-4 and earned the eventual victory with a 10-8 margin in the deciding set.
Sophomore Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) also battled hard at the No. 1 position, also forcing a third deciding set against her opponent, Ebba Rosberg. Carreras also won her opening set with a 6-3 decision before Rosberg evened things out with a 6-0 decision in the second set, winning the tiebreaking set 6-2.
The No. 1 singles win by Rosberg also guaranteed the victory for STAC, earning the fourth point of the match.
New Haven will host a doubleheader on Friday as they will welcome both Coppin State and Molloy to the New Haven Tennis Courts. First serve in the opening match against the Division I Eagles is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., while the second match of the day against the Lions is slated for 3:00 p.m.
