THE LEAD
Following its best season in program history and fresh off of earning the programs first ever national ranking, the New Haven field hockey team will return to the field on Monday for the first time in 2022 as they head to Adelphi for a non-conference battle against the Panthers.
SERIES HISTORY VS ADELPHI
Despite just a four-year history of field hockey at New Haven, the Chargers and Panthers have met six times previously, including three times in 2021, and at least one in each of the four seasons the program has existed. Overall, Adelphi holds a perfect 6-0 record in the all-time series, however the first meeting last season against the Panthers was the closest the two squads have played, finishing in a 2-1 decision. The last meeting came in the Chargers first ever appearance in the NE10 Championship with Adelphi taking a 2-0 victory to advance to the championship game. Â
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (0-0, 0-0 NE10)
New Haven enters 2022 after its most successful season in program history, closing out the year with a 10-10 overall record and a 9-5 record in NE10 action, earning the programs first ever bid to the NE10 Championship and defeating Bentley in the quarterfinal round. This season, New Haven returns many pieces from that 2021 squad, including three All-Conference selections in Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) (second team), Sophie Schreck (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) (third team) and Abby Nixon (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip Regional) (rookie team). Of that trio, Nixon and Schreck finished one-two in leading the Blue and Gold last season with seven and six goals, respectively. In addition, Nixon added five assists for a team-high 19 points, while Schreck chipped in a pair of assists. In addition to those three, New Haven also returns is starting keeper from a year ago, graduate student Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford) who played every minute between the pipes and finished the year with 135 saves. 0
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS (0-0, 0-0 NE10)
Adelphi enters 2022 following a trip to the NE10 Championship game a year ago and a trip to the NCAA Division II tournament where the Panthers season came to a close in the opening round against West Chester. Overall, the Panthers finished with a 14-7 overall record and a 10-4 mark in conference play. Leading the Panthers into the new season are the three leading scorers from a year ago, Kaylee Deleva (17), Giana McKeough (14) and Amanda Lee (10) who all combined for 41 of the years 84 goals. Adelphi also returns its starting keeper from a year ago, junior Amanda Montiel who played all but 30 minutes between the pipes. For the year, she finished with 77 saves.
THE SCHEDULE
The New Haven field hockey team will play an 18-game schedule in 2022 with seven of those games to take place at the friendly confines of Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. The Chargers will spend nearly the full month of September away from home, playing their first five games on the road before making their home field debut on September 27 against Pace. That home opener is the first of three straight at DellaCamera for the Charger, the last of which is the fifth and final non-conference game against East Stroudsburg. Overall, New Haven will play 13 conference games with the top eight teams following the regular season advancing to the NE10 Championship which will begin on Tuesday, November 15.
IN THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
Following its best season in school history a year ago, the University of New Haven field hockey team continues to turn heads across the country, securing the first-ever national ranking in program history, T-10th in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II Coaches Poll. The Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll is a composite ranking of the top- 10 teams in the nation, released weekly, beginning with a preseason poll ahead of week one competition. The Penn Monto/NFHCA Division II National Coaches Poll is voted on by NFHCA member coaches and has no bearing on selection to the 2022 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship.
