Make it Five in a Row, Chargers Hot Shooting Continues in 65-54 Road Win at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – After trailing 3-0 from the first basket of the day, the Chargers went on a 14-0 run to take an 14-3 lead and never looked back as they cruised to their fifth-straight win 65-54 over Franklin Pierce at The Fieldhouse. With the win, New Haven improves to 11-7 overall and 8-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference, now turning their attention to a three-game homestand which begins on Wednesday when they host the Saint Rose Golden Knights.

Leading the Chargers on the afternoon was senior point guard Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) who finished with a game-high 17 points, the majority of which came at the free throw line where she was a perfect 9-of-9. She also finished 4-of-8 from the field, while leading all players in the game with seven assists and pulled down three rebounds.

Overall, King was one of three Chargers in double figures with senior Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) following her as she returned to the double double club with her 10th of the season closing out the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Rounding out the leading scorers was transfer Leighanna Lister (Kutztown, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) who finished with 10 points, as she closed out the game shooting 5-of-8 from the field.

All but five of the Chargers 65 points came from their starting five with graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) and Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) following with nine and eight points, respectively. From the full starting five, Hogan had the best outing from the field, missing just one of her four attempts, while hitting her only attempt from outside the three point arc.

As a team, New Haven finished their second-straight game shooting over 50% from the field, connecting on 26-of-51 for 51 percent. Just two of their 26 buckets came from outside the three point arc, while the 9-of-9 at the line from King was part of an 11-of-18 performance overall. The 10 rebounds from Deshaies led to a 40-29 advantage on the boards for the Chargers.

FIRST QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        After surrendering that opening basket from the Ravens, New Haven's defense held Franklin Pierce scoreless for the next 4:30 as they built the first double digit lead of the day, which came on Hogan's three pointer.

·        The Ravens answered that scoring drought with back-to-back three pointers, part of eight unanswered from the home team which cut their deficit down to three.

·        The remaining two minutes consisted of the teams trading two point plays with New Haven taking an 18-15 lead into the intermission with Deshaies netting the final bucket of the period on a layup with 35 seconds remaining.

SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        New Haven opened up the scoring in the second quarter with King completing an old fashioned three point play, the first points in a 7-0 run that resulted in another double digit lead, 25-15.

·        After the Chargers matched that 10 point lead and then the teams traded two point buckets, the Ravens used the final five minutes of the period to slowly chip into the New Haven lead, pulling as close as four.

·        New Haven once again closed out the period with the final points, this time with King converting a second chance layup with three seconds remaining to provide a 31-25 margin at the break.

THIRD QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        Just like the second period, New Haven opened up the third scoring first, this time with Deshaies connecting on a jump shot on the first possession of the half.

·        Again after trading baskets for the next few minutes, the Ravens cut the deficit down to a single possession nearing the midway point of the quarter.

·        The closest Franklin Pierce would get in the period was within two with a three pointer at the 2:15 mark, a bucket that would prove to be the final of the period for the Ravens.

·        New Haven closed out the period scoring the final five points to take a 46-39 leading into the final break. This time around, Bianca Pendleton (Accokeek, Md./New Hope Academy) would provide the final points in the quarter for her team, converting another old fashioned three point play.

FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        New Haven's defense again came up big in the fourth quarter, holding the Ravens without a field goal for nearly eight minutes as it built the lead back to double figures.

·        DeBose and King opened up the fourth quarter scoring for New Haven, going back-to-back to extend the lead back into double figures at 50-39.

·        Franklin Pierce would hit a single free throw with 7:53 remaining, which proved to be their only points through seven-plus minutes of the fourth quarter.

·        Deshaies then sandwiched a Lister bucket with two of her own to complete a 6-0 run for New Haven, extending the lead to 56-40 just inside the five minute mark.

·        The Ravens shooting struggles continued after hitting that first bucket of the quarter, which came at the 2:16 mark, as they would again go without a bucket for more than a minute until a pair of three pointers that came 13 seconds part right around the one-minute mark.

·        New Haven's largest lead of the afternoon came with 88 seconds remaining when Stevenson converted a second chance layup which would prove to be the final bucket for her team, but New Haven closed out the game hitting 5-of-6 at the line.

·        The Ravens would get the last word of the afternoon with a three pointer with 13 seconds remaining which led to the final margin of the day, 65-54.
