Four of Five Starts in Double Figures as Chargers Win 69-60 at Georgian Court

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Behind a game-high 19 points from transfer Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton), the New Haven men's basketball team picked up a 69-60 win over Georgian Court on Wednesday afternoon a the GCU Wellness Center. With the win, New Haven improves to 9-3 on the season as they will next enter a stretch of 11-straight home games next time they take the court.

Perry's 19 points led four Chargers in double figures, following by Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) with 14 points and Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School) and Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) who each finished with 10 points. The lone starter not in double digits was center Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./), however the big man finished with another impressive performance on the boards, pulling down 17 in the game to improve his conference-leading double digit average.

As a team, New Haven finished the mid-afternoon matinee shooting 43.6 percent as they connected on 24-of-55 attempts from the field, including eight three pointers. They also added 13 points at the free throw line, with those 13 points coming on 17 attempts, while they finished with a commanding lead on the boards, 46-27.

The Chargers will return to action with a weekend matchup at Saint Anselm with a shot at lone possession of first place in the NE10 standings on the line. The Hawks, who enter tonight's game against Assumption with a 6-1 league record, and Chargers are scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. tip at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium in the first of two trips to Manchester this season or the Blue and Gold.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

·         After missing their first three field goal attempts, the Chargers went on to score seven unanswered which provided the first and only lead change of the day. Four of those seven points came at the free throw line with the lone field goal in that run, and the first of the day for UNH, a three pointer from Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie).

·         The Lions would go on to tie the score at seven and pull within a single point at 10-9 before New Haven went on the first of two 6-0 runs. The latter of those runs led to a 24-15, the largest of the game to that point with Sean Brathwaite providing the margin on a layup off a pass from Perry.

·         Just over 90 seconds later the Chargers took their first double digit lead at 26-16, to which Georgian Court responded by scoring six of the next eight points to pull within six at 28-22.

·         Over the final four minutes of the half, New Haven extended its lead to as much as nine on a pair of occasions, with a layup from Josh Hopson looking to be the final basket of the half and providing a 37-28 margin. However, GCU would have the last word hitting a three pointer with under 10 seconds remaining to provide the six point, 37-31, halftime margin.

·         A pair of Chargers were already into double figures at the halftime break with Perry leading all scorers with 13 points and Lane following him with 10, five of which came at the free throw line (5-of-6).

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

·         Coming out of the halftime intermission, neither team would find the bucket for nearly a minute and a half until a Majak dunk opened the second half scoring.

·         Following the first bucket of the frame from GCU, the Chargers began another scoring run, again at 6-0 which allowed the visiting team to take another double digit lead, 45-33. Perry would provide that lead on a steal and fast-break layup forcing the Lions to call for time.

·         The Lions came out of that timeout to score five straight, but New Haven shut down that run quickly with a three pointer on a step-back from Olawoye, regaining a 10-point lead.

·         Olawoye would then go back-to-back with Lane about two minutes later to extend the Chargers lead to 14, 54-40, before a three pointer from Georgian Court cut the momentum.

·         The Lions managed to cut their deficit down to single digits twice more during the final eight minutes, however New Haven saw its largest lead of the game come with just under 2:30 remaining after back-to-back three's from Thomas and Braithwaite provided a 15-point advantage, 66-51, effectively putting the game out of reach.

·         Six different Chargers got in on the scoring in the second half for New Haven with eight each from Perry and Olawoye leading the way, while Majak saw the majority of his rebounds coming in the final 20 minutes as he pulled down a dozen, including four offensive boards.
