West Haven, Conn. -The New Haven field hockey team took the field this afternoon for the second game this weekend, as they come off a 1-0 win against the Yellowjackets of American International College. Today, they hosted Bloomsburg University, who is ranked nationally at the No. 9 spot, a tough competitor for the Chargers over the past few years, falling 4-0.
The Huskies opened the game early in the first quarter and followed minutes later to advance their lead up to two. The Chargers defense would force Bloomsburg scoreless in the second and third quarters, looking to minimize the lead, but Bloomsburg would tack on two more goals in the fourth before the clock would run out.
Despite facing a 21-8 disadvantage in the shot column, the Chargers held strong finding both shots and corner throughout the game's entirety. The Chargers offense challenged Huskies' goalkeeper Jackie Nevel, placing seven of their eight shots on goal.
New Haven relied on a pair goalkeepers for the day with Hallie Reiger (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady School) recording five saves in one quarter of action, while Ally Saigh (Grosse Point Woods, Mich./Grosse Point North) racked up the remaining 10 saves on the afternoon.
Leading New Haven's offensive efforts on the afternoon was sophomore Eliza Caven (Caledon, Ontario/Humberview Secondary) who registered three of the eight total shots, while senior Kelli Jacobson (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) finished with a pair. Each of the two finished with two shots on goal, while senior Audrey Larson (Gilroy, Calif./Gilroy) and freshman Femke Boers (The Hague, Netherlands/Brasschaat, Belgium) added to the Chargers total finding one shot a piece.
New Haven returns to action on Wednesday night, October 4th, as they head to crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State for an anticipated rivalry matchup. The Northeast-10 Conference match-up is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
