West Haven, C.T- The New Haven men's soccer team has already surpassed its last season record, grabbing four wins thus far on the season, and made it five tonight under the lights of Kathy Zolad Stadium. Welcoming the Dolphins from the College of Staten Island, the Chargers were put to the test, facing adversity from the Dolphins defense, but would slip away with it from a second half goal from Sean Lane-Turnbull (Wellington, New Zealand/Rongotai College).
From the start the two teams came off evenly matched, moving their way up the field offensively and making strong stops in the backfield defensively. A new goalkeeper in goal for the Chargers Mattia Palanca (Grottammare, Italy/ITI Montani di Fermo), would hold his ground in net, making one save off one shot faced in the first half, but contributing to the movements up field from restarts in the backfield.
After the first 45 minutes of play, the first half would come off with neither team finding the back of the net. The Chargers led the Dolphins in the shot column five to one and grabbed one corner.
New Haven would break the stalemate in the 56th minute, Sean Lane-Turnbull (Wellington, New Zealand/Rongotai College) the goal scorer for the Chargers. Augusts McGiff would draw a foul for a free kick outside the box, sending a shot to the post that would be off target causing a goal kick for Staten Island. With three in the backfield the Dolphins goalkeeper looked to the short pass with his right back but would misplace the ball, causing it to go out of reach of the defender, and over the line for a Chargers throw in. Augustus McGiff (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) with the ball would send a perfect throw to the middle of the box, making a connection with Fabio Bastina Andreu (Logrono, Spain/La Laboral). Faced with pressure right away Bastina Andreu would redirect the ball behind him, connecting with Lane Turnbull overlapping behind him. Lane-Turnbull with space would send a rocket of a shot to the top left corner for the only goal of the night.
The pressure remained on, as the Dolphins pushed the offensive and kept the momentum going, looking for the equalizer. The New Haven back line, led by Palanca in goal would divert any opportunities from Staten Island, keeping them scoreless as time ran out in the second half.
Overall, the Chargers led the game 13-4 in shots, and grabbing five corners. The blue and gold's offensive led by sophomore Augustus McGiff (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) with four shots total, three landing on goal. Captain Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet) would find three shots in the game, forcing saves from the Dolphins goalkeeper on all three, followed by Sandro Branquinho (Covilha, Portugal/Wright State) and Oskar Kvarnback (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium) both finding one shot. Netminder Mattia Palanca (Grottammare, Italy/ITI Montani di Fermo) would make two saves on the night, facing a total of four shots, in his Chargers debut.
The Chargers now advance to 5-4-2 in overall play and remain 2-3-2 in conference play as they look to their next game to improve that conference record. The Chargers will stay on their home turf for the visit from the Panthers of Adelphi University, on October 17th. That game is set to start at 7:00 p.m. and you can catch all the action on the Chargers Sports Network on NE10 NOW.
