STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman Ethan Simmon (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) saw all of his buckets come from outside the arc while he also went a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line to lead the New Haven men's basketball team in a second-half comeback and its third-straight win 86-78 over Staten Island. With the win, New Haven improves to 4-7 overall.
Overall, Simmon was one of four Chargers to finish in double figures, the first time this season New Haven has had four players finish with double digits in the scoring column. For the game, Simmon finished tied for the game-high with 20 points, with his four three pointers coming on five attempts from long range and seven attempts overall.
Joining Simmon in leading the offense was senior Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) with 17 points and graduate transfer Tyler Saint-Furcy (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence Woodmere Academy) who added 16 points and completed his first career double double pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds. His 10 boards were part of 25 total for the team as the Chargers dropped the battle of the boards by a 38-25 margin.
Rounding out the double digit providers for New Haven was junior Keith Warren (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) who chipped in 10 pints. Saint-Furcy saw his 16 points come on 6-of-14 from the field including a trio of three pointers. Thomas finished the afternoon battle connecting on 4-of-8 overall with a pair of three pointers and was successful at the line in all but one of his seven free throw attempts.
Also among the leading scorers was sophomore Joshua Hopson (Jersey City, N.J./MacDuffie School) who finished just shy of a double digit outing with nine points, while Jah'Likai King (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) finished with eight. Hopson also led the Chargers with seven assists, while both he and Hopson followed Saint-Furcy in the rebounding column with five boards. Saint-Fursby also finished with four assists to his credit.
As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 47.4 percent from the field, connecting on 27-of-57 total attempts, with 11 of the 27 buckets coming from long range. New Haven also took advantage of 23 fouls called against the Dolphins by converting 21-fo-30 attempts at the free throw line.
Following the calendar rolling over to 2024, New Haven will return to action with a pair of road games next on the docket as they start out heading to Colchester, Vt. to take on the Saint Michael's Purple Knights. Opening tip in the NE10 battle is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the back end of a doubleheader with the women's team. All of the action from the Ross Sports Center will air live on NE10Now.tv.
