WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Jah'Likai King (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) stormed out of the gates to score 18 first half points and closed out the game with 26 to lead the New Haven Men's Basketball team (2-7, 1-4 NE10) in a 74-60 win over Adelphi University on Tuesday night at the Jeffery P. Hazell Athletic Center.
King scored on the opening possession of the game and added a three pointer 39 seconds later which was all part of a 19-0 run in the first five minutes for the Chargers as he was one of three Chargers to finish in double figures. Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) finished not far behind with 19 points, as both he and King scored more than any of the Panthers players. Rounding out the leading scorers for New Haven was sophomore Ethan Simmon (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) who came off the bench to add a baker's dozen 13.
Among the three leading scorers, Simmon led the way form the field where he was 5-of-8 overall while going 2-of-2 at the free throw line. Thomas followed him connecting on 7-of-11 overall, with a pair of outside and three at the line, while King finished the night shooting 9-of-17 from the field, with one from outside the arc, and going a perfect 7-of-7 at the free throw line.
As a team, New Haven closed out the night shooting a season-high 52.9 percent from the field, connecting on 27-of-51 shot attempts, with only four of those outside the three point arc. The Chargers also finished 16-of-18 at the line and held an impressive 38-22 advantage on the boards, the fourth-straight game outrebounding the opposition.
Leading the way in the rebounding column was sophomore Joshua Hopson (Jersey City, N.J./MacDuffie School) and Simmon who each pulled down eight bords, while seven different players contributed in the battle of the boards. In addition to his team-high 26 points, King also led the team with six assists and three steals, while adding five rebounds to his impressive line.
New Haven will conclude a stretch of three-straight home games when they welcome the Georgian Court Lions to West Haven for the penultimate game of the 2023 portion of the schedule. The non-conference clash is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. tip off with all of the action available live on NE10Now.tv.
