Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Win Streak Ended as Chargers Drop Road Decision at No. 18 Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – For the first time in over a month, the New Haven women's basketball team came up on the short end of the score, dropping a 60-44 decision to the No. 18 Assumption Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon at Laska Gymnasium. With the loss, which snaps a nine-game win streak for New Haven, the Chargers stand at 15-8 overall and 11-7 in the Northeast-10.

Leading the Chargers on the afternoon was senior Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden), the lone Charger in double figures with 12 points, shooting 6-of-11 overall, while pulling down nine rebounds, one shy of her 13th double double of the season. Following her in the scoring column was graduate student Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) who contributed nine points, while eight different players got in on the scoring action.

As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 30 percent from the field, making 18-of-60 field goal attempts, with a pair of those 18 baskets coming from outside the three point arc. They also added six points at the free throw line, which came on eight attempts. The Chargers best shooting came in the third quarter, where they finished 7-of-16 for 43.8 percent, while outscoring the Greyhounds 18-17 in that period.

The Chargers will return to West Haven next time they take the court, stepping aside from Northeast-10 play as they welcome the Staten Island Dolphins to Charger Gymnasium on Wednesday, February 15. Tipoff in the non-conference game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with all of the action available on the Charger Sports Network, part of NE10 NOW.

FIRST QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        Despite neither team getting on the board for more than two minutes, the Greyhounds would be the first time to put points on the board, taking an early 4-0 lead and never looked back.

·        Deshaies would get New Haven's first points of the night which came on a second chance layup after more than three minutes had passed.

·        Other than the two point different provided by Deshaies first bucket, the Chargers would only get as close as six in the first quarter, that coming on another Deshaies basket that put the margin at 12-6.

·        The Greyhounds would get the last word in the quarter with a three pointer in the final minute, the only bucket for either team in the final 2:30 of the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        The Greyhounds would get the first word in the second quarter as well, quickly extending their lead into double figures courtesy of another three pointer which came just 18 seconds into the action.

·        The First points from the Chargers came from sophomore Bianca Pendleton (Accokeek, Md./New Hope Academy) on the Blue and Gold's first possession of the period.

·        New Haven faced as much as a 19 point deficit in the second quarter, which came with 4:21 remaining before the break.

·        The bucket that provided that lead for the Greyhounds would be their final of the half as New Haven was able to cut the deficit to 14 before the buzzer sounded, using a three pointer from DeBose and a layup from king which came as time expired.

THIRD QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        New Haven came out of the locker room to extend their second-quarter ending rally by three more points as Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) hit a long range shot on the opening possession of the half, using an assist from Deshaies.

·        The Chargers early success continued as they managed to cut the deficit to seven on a trio of occasions, the first thanks to a perfect trip at the free throw line from King at the 6:46 mark. The latter of those seven points deficits came at the midway points of the quarter when DeBose scored on a driving layup.

·        Assumption answered that last seven point deficit by scoring seven unanswered to regain a 14 point lead with just under two minutes remaining.

·        DeBose would break that Assumption momentum with a floating jumper that put the deficit at a dozen.

·        After the Greyhounds regained a 15 point lead, New Haven got the final word in the frame on a layup from Stickler with 15 seconds remaining before the buzzer.

FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        The Greyhound weren't going to let New Haven's success in the third quarter continue as they opened up the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run that opened up a 54-35 lead with 7:14 remaining.

·        Hogan was able to stop that momentum with the first Chargers points in the period on a floating jumper 21 seconds later.

·        Assumption built their lead to more than 20 on one occasion coming down the stretch, that coming up a layup with 3:08 remaining and on the Greyhounds final bucket of the afternoon.

·        New Haven closed out the game scoring the final five points of the day, three from senior Aliyah Wright (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) and two on a layup from Pendleton.
