Chargers Pick Up Key Road Win, Take Down Le Moyne 62-57 on Saturday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Outscoring the Dolphins 23-8 over the final nine minutes of the game, the New Haven men's basketball team picked up an enormous 62-57 victory on the road at Le Moyne on Saturday afternoon. With the win, New Haven improves to 17-8 overall and 13-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference heading into the final game of the regular season on Tuesday night.

The win against Le Moyne allows New Haven the opportunity to play for a first round bye in the upcoming NE10 Championships. The winner of Tuesday night's regular season finale against Saint Anselm will take third place in the conference standings and earn one of three byes, advancing directly to the quarterfinal round on Sunday.

In the road victory at Le Moyne, New Haven was led by senior guard Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) who closed out the afternoon matching his career-high with 24 points as he shot 9-of-14 from the field, with one of those baskets from outside the three point arc, while also going 5-of-5 at the free throw line. Overall, Perry was one of three Chargers in double figures, joined by junior Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) with 15 and Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) with 11.

All but two of the Chargers 62 points came from its starting five with Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School) adding six and Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./) chipping in four, while Jason Edokpayi (Laurel, Md./Mount St. Joseph) was the only player off the bench to contribute, adding a pair. For the second game in a row, Majak dominate on the board, pulling down 15 rebounds, leading his team to a 31-29 advantage on the boards. Majak also added three blocks.

As a team, New Haven finished the night shooting 42.6 percent from the field, making 23-of-54 field goal attempts, with four of those field goals coming from outside the three point arc. In addition, the Chargers added 12 points at the free throw line, with those coming on 14 attempts.

Tuesday night's season finale against Saint Anselm is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start following the women's game, with all of the action from Charger Gymnasium scheduled to air live on the Charger Sports Network on NE10 NOW.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

·        After securing the opening tip, New Haven would get on the board first just 16 seconds into the action with a three from Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy), securing an early lead they would maintain until the 11:20 mark.

·        The largest lead for the Chargers during that stretch was five and it came on two occasions, the first on a step back jumper from Perry and the second two minutes later, again from Perry, but this time from outside the three point arc.

·        That early stretch with the lead for New Haven also included a pair of stalemates at 10 and 12, the first following a 5-0 run from the Dolphins.

·        New Haven answered the 12-all draw with a layup from Edokpayi before the Dolphins responded with a three to take their first lead of the game.

·        Neither team would manage to score of the next two minutes, while the Dolphins end up extending its lead out to four with 8:53 remaining before New Haven ended its drought with a pair of free throws from Lane and a three from Olawoye that regained a 19-18 lead.

·        Le Moyne responded with a driving layup for another lead change before building its lead out to as much as five just under the five minute mark.

·        Over the final five minutes, New Haven would add four more points to its tally, all of which came from Perry, while the Dolphins added one more bucket to end the quarter with a 29-25 advantage heading to the locker room.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

·        With the opening possession of the half, the Dolphins would get the first word of the half before Lane and Thomas went back-to-back to cut the Le Moyne lead down to a pair less than two minutes into the action.

·        Le Moyne responded by rattling off seven unanswered to build its lead out to nine, but New Haven wasn't going to rest, going on a run of its own. The Chargers answered their nine point deficit by going on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes with Majak starting the rally with a second chance layup.

·        The Dolphins answered right back with another rally, this time an 11-0 streak that put them up by double figures, 49-39 with 8:58 remaining.

·        From that point on, New Haven would close out the game outscoring the Dolphins 23-8 to earn the victory. The end of game run began with six unanswered from the Chargers that cut the deficit to four.

·        Le Moyne responded with a three with just under six minutes remaining, while Thomas answered on the other end with a layup that began a 9-0 run and provided another lead change.

·        The Dolphins again answered with a three for yet another lead change, while Lane answered for New Haven to take a 56-55 lead.

·        Le Moyne picked up its final two points at the free throw line with 1:29 remaining. Thomas answered for New Haven with a floating jumper to take a 58-57 lead, one they wouldn't relinquish.

·        After coming up empty on its next possession, the Dolphins were forced to send New Haven to the line with Perry and Thomas each converting both of their attempts down the stretch, the last two from Thomas with four seconds remaining to guarantee the victory.
