WEST HAVEN, Conn . – The New Haven women's basketball team saw its quest for a Northeast-10 Conference title dashed on Friday night, dropping a 57-49 decision to the visiting Franklin Pierce Ravens. With the loss, New Haven falls to 17-10 on the season.
Leading the Blue and Gold on the night was graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) who collected 11 points, with two of her three field goals coming from outside the arc. She also finished 3-of-6 at the free throw line.
Joining her in double figures was senior Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) and freshman Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) who each finished with 10 points. All of Hogan's points came in the first 20 minutes of action. DeShaies also completed her 14th double double of the season, pulling down 12 boards.
As a team, New Haven was held to just 28.8 percent from the field, connecting on 15-of-52 from the field, with six of those buckets from long range. They also converted 13-of-17 attempts at the free throw line.
FIRST QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· New Haven came out of the gates to score the first four points of the night, with Leighanna Lister (Kutztown, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) getting fouled on the opening possession and converting two at the line for the first points of the night.
· Defensively, the Chargers held Franklin Pierce to just two field goals in the first six-plus minutes, while during that stretch the Chargers drained a trio of attempts from beyond the arc, a pair from Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) and one from Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy), building a13-4 lead at the midway point of the quarter.
· The Blue and Gold extended that lead into double figures for the first time with just under four minutes to play when Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) converted a pair at the line to provide a 15-4 lead.
· The Ravens were able to cut the New Haven lead down to six before closing out the quarter, however the Chargers closed out the period with two more at the line, this time from Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley), to take a 19-11 lead into the intermission.
SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· Coming out of the break, the Chargers outside shooting continue with Hogan draining one from the corner to regain a double figure lead for the home team.
· Over the next nearly four minutes, the Ravens would muster the only points on a second chance layup, while defensively they held New Haven without a field goal until the 5:08 mark when Hogan struck again with a second chance layup after corralling the rebound from her own first attempt.
· That layup was the first points in a 7-0 rally that concluded with another Hogan three pointer as she extended the Chargers lead out to 13, 29-16 with 1:37 to play before the half expired.
· Franklin Pierce managed to cut that lead down to nine before the horn sounded, scoring the final four points of the period.
THIRD QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· Scoring was sparse to start the third quarter, with just seven points scored in the first four minutes, with five of those points coming from the home team as they extended the lead back to a dozen with just under six minutes remaining in the third thanks to Deshaies who scored back-to-back buckets.
· The Chargers would keep the lead in double digits until Franklin Pierce cut its deficit to six with 1:21 remaining.
· The final four points in the period all came at the free throw line with two each from the Chargers and Ravens, putting the margin at the final intermission at six, 38-32.
FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· Coming out of the final break, the Ravens would score nine of the first 10 points of the quarter, to completely erase the deficit and take their first lead of the game with 7:43 remaining.
· The Chargers shooting struggles continued, allowing Franklin Pierce to extend their lead to five with one minute to play.
· Franklin Pierce's largest lead came with 14 seconds remaining as they built the advantage out to nine points before Gabby Stickle broke the Chargers drought with a three pointer. The Ravens converted two more at the line for the final margin of the night.
