Chargers Drop North Carolina Finale

Murfreesboro, North Carolina. – After opening their season with a double header of Friday the University of New Haven Softball team wrapped up their North Carolina trip with a Saturday morning game against Frostburg State to beat out the weather. In their first ever meeting with Frostburg State the Chargers looked to pick up their first win of the season and hand Frostburg State their second loss of the season.

Mia Iodice (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) returned to the circle looking to pick up the win after throwing six innings of work giving up one earned run on five hits striking out nine in her performance against Chowan on Friday. The Bobcats turned to small balls, getting their leadoff batter on with a bunt before Iodice picked up the first out with a strikeout. After a stolen base and a single the Bobcats pushed the first run across in the inning to take the early lead before Iodice ended the inning with a strikeout registering her second of the inning. In the home half of the first, the Chargers responded immediately with Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) reaching with a leadoff walk followed by Kylie Thorpe (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) being hit by a pitch, setting up first and second with no outs. After aggressive baserunning on day one paid off for the Chargers, head coach Don Justus went back to that strategy and put the double steal on having Chenet steal third and Thorpe steal second putting both in scoring position with one away in the inning. Allsion Murai put the ball in play in her at bat forcing an error on the third baseman reaching on the error and scoring Chenet from third to tie the game at one and still having two on with only one away. The aggressive baserunning continued as Murai took off for second forcing a rushed throw that allowed Thorpe to score from second and send Murai to third giving the Chargers their first lead of the game and continuing to do damage with only one away in the inning. With two across and Murai on third Maeve Lougheed (Audobon, N.J./Audobon) came up to bat and put the ball in play on the infield forcing the infield to make a decision. The Bobcats took the sure out at first getting the second out but Lougheed scored Murai to take the 3-1 lead at the end of the first. In the second Iodice sat the Bobcats down picking up another strikeout and keeping it a 3-1 game. In the third the Bobcats cut into the lead off a solo homerun before Halle Frederick (Green Lane, Pa./Quakertown) ended the inning throwing out the base runner at second. Frostburg tied the game up in the fourth before taking the lead in the fifth and going ahead from there. The Bobcats would go on to win the final 18-3 in the Chargers final game in North Carolina. Iodice finished her day after five innings of working striking out four but giving up nine earned runs on ten hits. Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn./Killingly) made her pitching debut for the Chargers throwing one and a third innings giving up three earned runs on four hits. Aaliyah Amidon (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) closed out the game for the blue and gold getting the last two outs giving up one run on four hits. The Chargers offense pushed across their three runs on one hit with three stolen bases.

With the North Carolina trip complete the Chargers return home for two weeks of practice before the team gears up for their Florida trip that begins March 12 where the team will play 11 games on the 10 day trip. The Chargers still hunting for their first win of the season will look to do that in the sunshine state.
