WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Behind four players in double figures, the New Haven men's basketball team closed out its three-game homestand with a 55-48 win over the visiting Saint Michael's Purple Knights on Tuesday night. With the win, the Chargers improve to 15-7 overall and 12-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Leading the Chargers four scorers on the night was senior transfer Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) who closed out the night with 16 points. The guard closed out the game shooting 4-of-13 from the field, with one of those from beyond the three point arc, while excelling at the free throw line, making 7-of-9 attempts at the line.
Graduate guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) followed Perry with an even dozen, while Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) and Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School) each contributed 11 points. The final starter, Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./) made his contribution on the boards where he pulled down a game-best 17 boards, part of a 39-29 advantage for his team. Lane and Olawoye also finished with five and four assists, respectively.
As a team, New Haven finished the night shooting 38.8 percent from the field, making 19 of the 49 total attempts taken. Just two of those 19 baskets came from outside the arc, while the Chargers more than doubled Saint Michael's at the free throw line where they were 15-of-20.
The Chargers will return to action on Saturday, February 11 when they head north to Worcester, Mass. to take on the Assumption Greyhounds. Tipoff in the NE10 battle is scheduled for 3:30 with all of the action live on NE10 NOW.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS
· Saint Michael's, the leading three point team in the NE10, opened up the game from outside the arc to take an early lead, one they would hold on to through the first three-plus minutes.
· New Haven took its first lead on a three pointer with Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) scoring the one and only lead changing bucket off an assist from Lane.
· The Purple Knights were able to knot the score at seven, but the Chargers answered by going on a 10-2 run to extend their lead to eight, 17-9.
· After trading points for the next six minutes, New Haven extended its lead into double figures for the first time with 5:22 remaining as Olawoye converted a layup off a Purple Knights turnover with Lane picking off the steal.
· The Chargers largest lead, 12, came with 1:35 remaining before the break, but the Purple Knights would get the last word, the same way they opened the game with a three pointer that put the halftime margin at 32-23.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS
· This time around it was the Chargers who struck first with Perry draining the first points of the half, a second chance opportunity 21 seconds into the action.
· The next four minutes would consist of basket trading before the Chargers defense kicked in to hold the Purple Knights without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes, which allowed them to go on a 12-0 run and open up a 21 point lead, 48-27.
· Saint Michael's would end its drought with a layup at the 7:14 mark, beginning a comeback that would cut their deficit to as low as four points with 18 seconds remaining.
· The Chargers would close out the game converting 3-of-4 at free throw line in the final seven seconds to secure their second straight victory.
