MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Chargers defense proved once again it is one of the toughest in the nation, holding Caldwell to just 34 percent from the field and 22 points under their average scoring en route to a 77-56 win over the Cougars in the NCAA Division II East Region semifinals. With the win, New Haven improves to 22-10 on the year and advances to take on Bentley in the regional championship on Tuesday with tip scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Saint Anselm's Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Three of the Chargers starting five racked up double figures to lead the Blue and Gold in the scoring column with junior Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) leading all players with 18 points. Included in his tally were four three pointers, the second of which pushed the guard over the 1,000 career point plateau becoming the 39th player in program history to reach that pinnacle. Overall, Thomas finished the game 7-of-9 from the field, while also pulling down five boards and dishing a hat trick of assists.
Joining him in leading the offense was senior transfer guard Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) who closed out 20 minutes of action with 17 points, connecting on 6-of-9 from the field and adding four points at the free throw line. Rounding out the leading trio was graduate guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) who finished with 15 points while dishing out nine assists, matching his career-high that he set earlier this postseason against Southern Connecticut in the quarterfinals of the Northeat-10 Championship. His nine assists were part of 19 total for the team, matching a team-best on the year originally set against Staten Island on February 15.
As a team, New Haven closed out the game shooting 52.8 percent from the field, including seven buckets from outside the three point arc. Additionally, New Haven added 14 points at the free throw line, those coming on 16 attempts for an 87.5 percent average.
