LEESBURG, Florida. – After picking up their first win on Thursday, the University of New Haven Softball team looked to carry over the success into their final day of games in the sunshine state. With their final doubleheader, the Chargers opened up against D'Youville before being able to sit and rest before their rematch with the University of Mary in the finale of spring break softball for the blue and gold. The matchup with the Saints marked the first meeting between the two teams as the meeting with the Marauders marked the second time the two teams have met and the second time of the week.
The bats of the Chargers did their damage with two outs on Thursday and in the first inning against the Saints, the Chargers stuck with what worked. Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) led the inning off with a single through the right side. After Meg Anderson (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) was hit by a pitch setting up first and second with one away in the inning, the Saints got the second out of the inning looking to strand Chenet and Piccirilli, who was on to pinch run for Anderson. Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn./Killingly) had other plans forcing an error on the Saint's second baseman reaching on the error and scoring Chenet to give New Haven the early lead. Selena Aponte (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) returned to the circle with the lead, looking to pick up her second win in two starts. After giving up a leadoff single, Aponte responded by striking out the Saint's two batters to get the first out of the inning. The Saints picked up one more hit in the inning and forced an error on the Charger's defense to score a run to tie the game at one. With the game tied at one, the Chargers bats responded again in the second as Ashley Veisz (Robbinsville,N.J./Robbinsville) led the inning off with a triple. With a runner in scoring position, Hailey Polisano (Howell, N.J./Howell) responded with the opportunity to take the lead again putting the ball in play scoring Veisz from third giving the Chargers the lead once again. The Chargers held the lead until the fourth when the Saints took their first lead scoring a pair before the Saints extended their lead to four in the fifth. Trailing by four entering the seventh inning the Chargers looked to use the luck of the Irish to mount their comeback. Maeve Lougheed (Audobon, N.J./Audobon) got the inning started with a double down the line getting the energy going. Meg Anderson (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) stayed red hot from the batters box trading places with Lougheed with a double to the right-center game to put the first run of the inning on the board. Sarah Smith (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) pinch ran for Anderson and advanced to third on Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn./Killingly)s single to left field setting up second and third with one away. Skylar Griffin (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) stepped into the box and with pressure on, Griffin cashed in singling to center scoring Smith and Veillette to make it a one-run game. The Chargers had two more attempts but came up short getting within one but couldn't get the final hit they needed. The Charger's offense combined for eight hits scoring five runs with two walks. Aponte finished in the circle throwing five innings of work allowing six runs, four earned on eight hits striking out three. Griffin took the loss in the circle throwing one inning of work.
After the loss, the Chargers sought revenge against the Marauders of the University of Mary a team they lost to earlier in the week. The meeting between the Marauders turned into a pitching duel between Mia Iodice (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) and Chambers of the Marauders. The Chargers were the first to break through in the fifth. Stephanie Smith (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) was the first to break through singling on the infield to reach. Smith advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt to advance Smith to second. Smith advanced to third on Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy)s's single to left field. Maeve Lougheed (Audobon, N.J./Audobon) lifted a hit deep to the outfield deep to score Smith from third to give New Haven the lead. Meg Anderson (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) then gave her team a little insurance for the game doubling to score Chenet giving the blue and gold a two-run lead heading into the sixth. Mia Iodice (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) shut down the Marauders over the next two innings to pick up the win and secure the Charger's revenge win over the University of Mary. Iodice threw seven innings of three-hit softball striking out a pair while only walking one. The offense scored their two runs on seven hits to secure the win improving the Chargers to 2-11 overall.
