Offense Heats Up and Defense Steps Up as Chargers Top No. 15 Mercy 17-7

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A second quarter shutout from the New Haven defense led to a 12-3 halftime score the New Haven women's lacrosse team never looked back as they scored a 17-7 win over the No. 15 Mercy Mavericks under the lights at Kathy Zolad Stadium. With the win, New Haven improves to 6-5 on the season.

The majority of the Chargers offense came from its starting 11, while the goalkeeping of junior Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) was standup all night as she stopped a total of 11 shots to earn her sixth victory of the season between the pipes.

Leading the Chargers offense on the night was a trio of players with Savannah Ernst (American Fork, Utah/American Fork), Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and Marielle Colalillo (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) all putting up a hat trick in the scoring column. Among the trio, Ernst led the way with five points adding a pair of assists, while Caprioli and Colalillo also had a helper for a total of four points apiece.

Joining Ernst in leading the Chargers with five points on the night was sophomore Raegan Bailey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) and senior Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy) who each finished with five points racking up a pair of goals and adding a game-high three assists apiece. Rounding out the New Haven offense was Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) with a pair of goals and Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) and Olivia Tarricone (Lacey Township, N.J./Lacey Township) who each had a goal.

New Haven will go back under the lights in less than 48 hours when they return to Northeast-10 action with a visit from crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday, April 13. Opening draw against the Owls is set for 7:00 p.m.
