Homerun Ball Leads Softball Past St. Rose in Series Sweep

ALBANY, New York. – After spending the night upstate New York, the University of New Haven Softball team returned to the diamond looking to erase their memories of their prior day's loss to Le Moyne. New Haven traveled to Albany to take on the Golden Knights of The College of Saint Rose in an NE10 conference doubleheader, and in the Charger's middle series of their New York road trip.

Selena Aponte (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) returned to the circle and looked to build upon the success that she had as she came on in relief during game two against Le Moyne the day before quieting the bats of the Dolphins. In the first, the Golden Knights took the first lead after a leadoff single was driven in by Saint Roses's second hit of the inning into centerfield scoring the game's first run. That lead would not last as Meg Anderson (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) stepped in with one out in the inning and went deep clearing the fence in the left field coming around to score making it a 1-1 game. After the first inning run scored off Aponte, that would be all she let cross as Aponte had her pitches working for her. Aponte would strike out four in the game giving up only one free pass while getting nine Golden Knight batters to fly out and eight to ground out to the blue and gold's infield. With Aponte rocking in the circle, it was a matter of time before the offense broke through and they did just that in the sixth. With six outs to go for the blue and gold all tied at one, Olivia Roberto (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) got the inning going with a single to left before advancing to second on Meave Lougheed's single to right field. Halle Frederick (Green Lane, Pa./Quakertown) stepped into the box with the Charger's best chance of the game to break the game open and did just that. Frederick for the second time this season homered clearing the bases and scoring Roberto, Lougheed, and herself making it a 4-1 Chargers lead as Aponte needed to get the final six Golden Knight outs. Aponte did just that with her defense making the plays and her striking out one to bring her game total to four. The Charger's offense combined for four runs on six hits with two being home runs, as Chenet added a stolen base.

With the win, New Haven looked to make it a sweep heading into game two and their final game before Easter and turned to graduate student Mia Iodice (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) to get that done from the circle. The Chargers struck first in the first inning after Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) led the inning off with a single and stole second base before advancing to third on a ground ball. Chenet came around to score off Maeve Lougheed's (Audobon, N.J./Audobon) single to center taking the 1-0 lead. With the lead Iodice went to work and dominated from the circle. Already up 1-0 New Haven added to their lead in the fourth after Ashley Veillette (Danielson, Conn./Killingly) reached with a one out walk. Ashley Veisz (Robbinsville,N.J./Robbinsville) stepped in and for the second time cleared the fence for a two-run home run making it 3-0 Chargers. That was all Iodice needed who was cruising through five innings before she gave up her first runs. The Golden Knights made things interesting in the sixth scoring two runs off Iodice but she slammed the door shut letting that be the only runs they would score against her and the Chargers. With her 11 strikeouts in the win, Iodice surpassed 300 career strikeouts in the blue and gold uniform. The 11 strikeouts were also a season-high for the pitcher who threw seven innings of two-run four-hit softball. The Charger's three runs came off five hits including Veisz's second home run of the season while the Chargers drew seven walks in the win.

With the sweep, New Haven returns home for Easter before the team returns to the diamond when they travel to Garden City to take on the second-place team in the conference the Panthers of Adelphi on Tuesday, April 11. With the opportunity to make a statement after the sweep of Saint Rose the Chargers take on the Panthers on the road with first pitch from the Garden City coming at 2:30 p.m. with game two coming approximately half an hour after the competition of game 1. All updates, schedules, and post-game recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
