New Haven Tennis Takes Home Their Second of the Season Against Franklin Pierce

West Haven, C.T- Coming off a sweep for their home opening match, the Chargers looked to keep the momentum going as they welcomed the Ravens of Franklin Pierce to their home courts. The Chargers were able to come up with the win 5-2, after some hard-fought matches against a solid opponent. With that win New Haven opens their season with two wins under their belt as they enter the ITA Regionals this Friday.

Starting off the day, the blue and gold took the court to begin their doubles matches. The #3doubles pair Anna Katz (Miami, Fla./Laurel Springs) and Lucia Placidi (Melbourne, Australia/Distance Education Centre Victoria) finishing first with the Chargers first win on the afternoon, with a sweep of 6-0. Alyssa Rodriguez (Tampa, Fla./HB Plant) and doubles partner Risako Umekuni (Saitama, Japan/Shumei Eiko), would put up a good fight in the #2 doubles, unfortunately falling short, 6-3.

With the matches split 1-1, it came down to doubles pair Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) and Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra). Franklin Pierce doubles pair Zoe Asterio-Correra and Aynara Ferraz Armas, gave the Chargers a run for their money, putting up a 5-0 run on the Chargers for the doubles point. Ferrarini and Carreras, down 5-0, took seven straight points, to come back and win the match 7-5, securing the doubles point for New Haven.

Franklin Pierce took the first point of the singles round, due to an injury that would force a win by opponent retirement. Augustina Ravera and Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) would follow that securing two points for the Chargers winning both their sets 6-0, 6-0. Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) would also grab herself a win and a point for the blue and gold with score of 6-2, 6-3.

Another highlight of the game came from junior Risako Umekuni (Saitama, Japan/Shumei Eiko), from the No. 3 singles match. Umekini clinched the match in favor of New Haven when she won the third singles point, 6-1, 6-0, guaranteeing the Chargers the win.
