Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Morgan McCarty

New Haven Takes Home 1-0 Win from Team Across the Street

New Haven, C.T- The Chargers headed down the street to take on New Haven's neighboring rival the Southern Connecticut Owls. The blue and gold, taking home the 1-0 win, broke up the Owls three-year winning streak against New Haven that has stood since the men's soccer 2019 season. With that win the Chargers open their Northeast-10 Conference play with one win and one draw, as they look to face five conference teams in a row over the next three weeks.

Graduate student Gianluca Cerosimo (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuela Arentina Modelo) secured his first shutout of the season, closing out the full 90, facing 9 shots total from the Owls.

The Chargers got on the board late in the first half of the contest with the first goal of the season from Oskar Kvarnback (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium) as he broke the stalemate. The goal would come from a pass in the backfield from Marc Jourdain (Tampa, Fla./Durant) up the field to Kvarnback, who would received the ball and dribble through the defense into the box and roll it past the keeper.

Although the Chargers got the win the Owls would outshoot them 9-5, though none of the shots would find their way on goal. New Haven tallied up a total of two corner kicks, and five shots led by Oskar Kvarnback (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium) with two shots on the afternoon. Sophomores Derik Meza (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) and Erik Cedeberg (Skaene, Sweden/Soederlaettsgymnasiet), alongside graduate student Tyrone Malango (Mount Vernon, N.Y./), would all find one shot for the Chargers.

With two games of conference play in the books, New Haven will look to continue as they are lined up to play five conference games in a row in the upcoming weeks. First up is a road trip to Springfield, Massachusetts to take on the American International College Yellowjackets. The Chargers will look to take home a win, after a 0-0 draw with the Yellowjackets last year. The game is set to take place on Friday, September 22nd with a start time of 4:00 p.m.
