Mays Stepping Down to Pursue Outside Opportunity

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – University of New Haven Interim Director of Athletics Jon Mays has announced his resignation from Charger Nation in order to pursue an opportunity outside of collegiate athletics back in his home state of Minnesota. Mays will remain on campus through Homecoming, Saturday, October 14.

"I would like to express my greatest appreciation to Jon for his leadership," said Interim President Sheahon Zenger. "I asked Jon to come for a year and he stayed for four. Jon was a big part of the growth that Charger Nation experienced during that time."

"It has been an absolute pleasure to serve our student-athletes and work to build on the tremendous history of success in Charger Athletics," said Mays. "I am grateful to Dr. Zenger for the opportunity and mentorship he has provided and thankful to all the dedicated staff and coaches that have supported our vision to deliver on an unprecedented student-athlete experience. I look forward to watching their continued growth on the fields and courts, in the classroom and in the community."

Mays came to New Haven in October 2019 as Associate Director of Athletics for Administraiton where his responsibilities included developing student-athlete leadership programing and working with the Office of Development to bolster fundraising efforts.

In the fall of 2022, he took on the role of Interim Director of Athletics and has successfully continued the execution of a comprehensive strategic vision that has brought the department to new heights. Under his leadership, the Charger Athletic Fund has flourished, growing substantially following its inception in 2021.

"Going forward we are fortunate to have a dedicated staff as well as a pair of consultants, Tim Schlosser and Jane Widger-Fulton, who have been with me for nearly two decades and will continue to assist me in leading the department," continued Zenger.
