Chargers Take 4-3 Win Against Assumption To Remain Undefeated

Worcester, M.A- After a long weekend at the ITA Regionals, the Chargers looked to the rest of their regular season schedule, as they headed to Worcester to take on the Greyhounds of Assumption College. Going into this game the blue and gold had two wins under their belt, heading in undefeated and took home the win to move to 3-0 thus far this season, with a 4-3 match score.

New Haven started off taking all three matches, to take the doubles point before going into the singles matches. Powerhouse doubles team Kaarim Carreras and Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) took all points away from their Greyhound opponents, taking their match 6-0. No. 2 doubles Risako Umekuni (Saitama, Japan/Shumei Eiko) and Lucia Placidi (Melbourne, Australia/Distance Education Centre Victoria), as well as No. 3 doubles pair Alexa Orlando (/) and Madi Mabrito (/) both took their matches 6-2.

Moving into the singles, Assumption still had the opportunity to win the match, despite losing the doubles point. All matches lasted a total of two sets, aside from No. 2 doubles. Risako Umekini at No. 3 singles would win her match in two sets, with score 6-2, 6-2 and No. 6 singles with Lucia Placidi (Melbourne, Australia/Distance Education Centre Victoria) would take her match 6-1, 6-3. Both grabbing points to push the Chargers up to 4 points on the afternoon, Assumption grabbing their three points during the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 singles. Waiting for the last singles match to finish, the two teams were even at three points a piece, waiting for the No.1 singles with Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) to finish.  Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) would take down her opponent Marie Knispel in a two-set match, 7-5, 6-3., giving the Chargers their fourth point and winning the match.

The result of the hard-fought match favoring the Chargers over the Greyhounds, pushing them 3-0 in Northeast-10 conference play. New Haven will now look to keep their undefeated streak alive as they look forward to a non-conference match against Salve Regina at their home courts. That match is set to take place Saturday, September 23rd with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
