Garrett Finds Lone Goal in 5-1 Loss Against Assumption

Worcester, M.A - The New Haven Field Hockey team headed back on the road to take on another Northeast-10 Conference opponent the Greyhounds of Assumption this evening under the lights of Brian Kelly '83 Stadium. The history between the Chargers and the Greyhounds is quite rich, including some highly competitive games and the first program win against Assumption last year, with a 2-1 overtime win. Paige Garrett (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area) would be the lone goal scorer for the Chargers, as they would take this years game with a 5-1 loss.

Right off the bat the Greyhounds took control of the game, finding their offensive movements from the start, and limiting the Chargers movements up field. The Chargers held strong, pushing their way up the field, finding one offensive opportunity by Kat Trammel (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) in the first quarter, but Assumption would eventually find the first goal of the game at six minutes of play.

Down by one the game continued with a lot of midfield play, the defense from the Chargers remaining a prominent component of the game thus far. Assumption would eventually advance their lead to 2-0, in the tenth minute of play, off another penalty corner. As the second quarter began the Chargers still trailed the Greyhounds by two, but would be shut down by the Assumption defense, gathering them no shots in the second quarter. Assumption would push up the field to find their third goal of the game in the 24th minute of play.

Entering half-time, the Chargers had gained minimal offensive opportunities, only gathering one shot in the first half on the opportunity by Kat Trammel (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown). Goalkeeper Hallie Reiger (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady School) would take her well deserved breather during the break with ten saves under her belt.

Coming out of the half, New Haven had a newfound energy. Trailing the Greyhounds by three, they needed an offensive opportunity, and they were determined to find it to lessen the lead. Numerous balls would be won back in the midfield, giving the Chargers more shots on goal than they had gotten in the first half. But nothing would find its way past the goal line on the Chargers offensive end. Assumption would find two more goals before the whistle was blown and time had run out.

Despite the lead from the Greyhounds, New Haven would find one goal on the night, in the fourth quarter. That goal coming in the 47th minute, when Paige Garrett (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area) would win the ball in Assumption's defensive end, making moves through three Greyhound players to make her way into the circle. With no one on Garrett found a lifted shot that would be sent to the backboard for the Chargers only goal of the game and Garrett's first goal of the season.

The blue and gold would find a total of four shots throughout four quarters, Kat Trammel (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) leading the way for New Haven with two shots. Starting goalie, Hallie Reiger (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady School) would face a total of 25 shots, making a total of 20 saves on the evening, the highest recorded saves on the season for Reiger.

Looking into the future, the Chargers will continue with their play of Northeast-10 Conference opponents, as they welcome the Yellowjackets of American International College to DellaCamera field this weekend. New Haven has a three-year long streak of wins against the Yellowjackets, as they look to this weekend to make it four in a row. That game is scheduled for Saturday, September 30th with a start time of 5:00 p.m. You can catch all the game action on the Chargers Sports Network on NE10 NOW.
