West Haven, CT – After a first game win for the Chargers against cross-town rival Bridgeport, New Haven took to their home turf to try and continue the momentum for their home opener. Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet) coming off a two-goal game to lead the Chargers to their first win, would once again find himself a goal, followed by Augustus McGiff (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) a transfer sophomore finding his first goal in the blue and gold.
The first half of the game was a battle between the Chargers and the Lions, with both teams finding their way both offensively and defensively. It was not until the end of the game that New Haven would find themselves consistent offensive momentum, maintain the ball in Molloy's 25 for the last ten minutes of the half. The Chargers would find themselves six shots in the last leg of the first half, with multiple players applying pressure in the box. New Haven would get off eight shots on goal, leading the game and putting defensive pressure on the backline of Molloy. On the opposite end of the field, sophomore Kyle Mather (Amesbury, Mass./Central Catholic) would find himself facing two shots, saving both to keep the game tied at zero.
Coming back onto the field after the half the Chargers kept the offensive momentum rolling, within the first few minutes of the game New Haven would already be firing off shots to Molloy goalkeeper Dennis Mejia. It would not be til the 52nd minute of the game, that Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet) would open the scoring, and give his team the first lead of the game. With a corner kick for New Haven, Sean Lane-Turnbull (Wellington, New Zealand/Rongotai College) would be over the ball, sending in a spot-on kick to the center of the box, where Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet) would head the ball into the corner just pass the reach of the goalkeeper for his third of the season.
Up one the Lions looked to even out the score, but for twenty-five minutes the game would be played back and forth, as the Lions attempts were met with the strong defense of New Haven's backfield. With just under nine minutes left in the game Molloy would find the tying goal, after regaining possession in the Chargers 25, crossing the ball to the middle to find Harvey Chahal with a header to the back corner of the net.
With the game tied and the clock running down both teams looked for the go-ahead goal. A yellow card would be given to Molloy's Jonas Jacobsen, giving the Chargers a free kick right outside of the box. With one New Haven player over the ball, Augustus McGiff (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) would remain a few steps behind, as the Chargers sorted themselves out in front of the goalkeeper. When the whistle was blown, McGiff came with a straight shot to the high right corner of the goal, giving the Chargers the lead with just seven minutes remaining. Despite Molloy's efforts to find the second tying goal of the game, the Chargers would maintain possession and take home their second win on the season.
Overall, the Chargers totaled 15 shots, only four finding their way on goal, as well as three corners. Goalkeeper Kyle Mather (Amesbury, Mass./Central Catholic) faced nine shots throughout the game, four of which were on goal, saving three. Numerous players would find themselves shots on the game, however New Haven's offensive efforts were lead by Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet) and Oskar Kvarnback (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium), both with two shots.
New Haven will take their two straight wins and put it on the line as they head down to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to take on the Jefferson Rams on Wednesday, September 13th. That game is scheduled for a 5:00 start.
