WHAT'S ON TAP
Wrapping up back-to-back home games and closing out the month of January, New Haven welcomes the Assumption Greyhounds on Tuesday night as they look to snap a three-game skid and break a seven game win streak for the Greyhounds.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
A conference leading, and top-20 in the nation, eight double doubles from graduate post player Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) and she is one of the key leaders for the Chargers, averaging 11.8 points and an NE10 leading 10.6 rebounds. Also on a bit of a hot streak is junior guard Charlotte Bassett (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) who has scored in double figures in eight of the last 12 games, including a career-high 22 points against Georgian Court and her first double double (15 points, 10 rebounds) against Franklin Pierce. Her recent success has also moved her up the scoring column, currently third on the team with an average of 9.0 ppg. Rounding out the trio of top scorers is sophomore Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) who has helped fill the void left by the loss of two of the top three scorers from a year ago as she is averaging 10.5 points per game. The Chargers have relied on the experience of senior Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) to run the offense and she has not disappointed, dishing out 54 assists and is ninth in the NE10 with 3.2 per game. Included for Stickle is a pair of games with a career-high eight assists versus Goldey-Beacom and Georgian Court. As a team, New Haven is outscoring opponents by an average of 2.2 points per game, scoring 80+ in the first two games of the season, after hitting that scoring mark just once all of last season. All combined, the Chargers are shooting 38.9 percent (367-944) as a team, led by Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) who is shooting 48.3 percent from the field (86-178).
SCOUTING ASSUMPTION
Another hot team in the Northeast-10, the Greyhounds enter Tuesday night riding a seven-game win streak after picking up a road win over Southern Connecticut this past weekend. The only loss in the month of January for the Greyhounds came in the first game back from break against current No. 1 team Bentley. With their 10-3 record in the NE10, the Greyhounds are currently in a three-way tie with Saint Rose and Southern New Hampshire for second place in the league standings as the top-four teams will earn a bye in the opening round of the NE10 Championship which will begin in March. On the court, the Greyhounds are outscoring their opponents by an average of 15.3 points per game, 15th best in NCAA D2, while they are fifth in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to 52.6 ppg. Individually, the Greyhounds are led by Molly Stokes who is averaging 15.4 points per game, with a third of her field goals coming from outside the three-point arc.
