WEST HAVEN, Conn. – An undefeated fall for the University of New Haven women's tennis team continues after opening up the postseason with a 4-0 sweep of fourth seeded Southern New Hampshire University to open up play in the Northeast 10 Conference Championship.
With the win, New Haven improves to 10-0 and will now take on No. 2 seed Adelphi, the reigning league champion, for the league title on Sunday afternoon at the New Haven Tennis Courts. First serve in doubles action is slated to get underway at 12:00 p.m. with all of the action available live on the Chargers YouTube channel.
New Haven opened up the day winning the doubles point, however the decision would come down to the No. 2 doubles pair of Risako Umekuni (Saitama, Japan/Shumei Eiko) and Victoria Togores (Canary Islands, Spain/Colegio Hispano Ingles). The first doubles pairing to finish was the No. 3 pairing of Leni Bischof (Aigen, Austria/BRG Stainach) and Laura Ortner (Schlierbach, Austria/BRG Kirchdorf) who took an opening victory with a 6-2 decision. The Penmen would answer at the No. 1 position with an identical score to even the doubles battle out at one win apiece.
With New Haven ahead 4-3 in the second doubles match-up, the Penmen wouldn't go away, eventually forcing the match to a 5-5 stalemate before New Haven locked in for the final two points and the 7-5 victory, including not relinquishing a single point in the final game.
Heading into single play, the Chargers looked to be in command from the start with first set victories in five of the six singles matches. The first to wrap up a point in favor of her squad was Agustina Ravera (Miramar, Fla./Broward Virtual School) at the No. 6 position, taking the decision with identical 6-1, 6-1 scores.
Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) at the No. 2 singles position would be the next to lock up a point winning her match-up 6-2, 6-1 and putting the Chargers ahead 3-0 in the match. With close battles at No. 1 and No. 3 singles looking to extend the match it was the freshman Togores at No. 4 singles that clinched the victory and advanced her team to the finals. Togores won her opening set 6-3 and took the point with a 6-2 decision in the second set.
The No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches both ended in favor of the Chargers with Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) leading 6-2, 5-3 in the top singles spot while Umekuni led 6-2, 4-3 at the No. 3 position. Ortner would round things out at the No. 5 spot, dropping her opening set 6-1 but holding a 3-1 advantage in the second set at the time the match was halted.
