WEST HAVEN, Conn – After a road sweep of the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University, the University of New Haven Volleyball team returned home as the prepared for a redemption game against the Mavericks of Mercy University who bested the Chargers in the NCAA Regional Tournament a year ago. New Haven welcomed the Mavericks to their home court where they are perfect on the season and looked to keep it that way.
New Haven opened up the first set with a statement as Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) opened up with a kill to start a 4-0 run to start. Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) added an ace on the run as that set the tone for the set. Mercy bounced back and settled into the set and took a slim lead but New Haven quickly responded and retook the lead. Mast was the hot hand in the first set and the blue and gold continued to find her as she ended the opening set with a kill to win the first, 25-13. In the second set Mercy responded and settled into the match and cleaned up the mistakes they made in the first. The Mavericks had an early lead that New Haven battled back in late but were unable to pull away as Mercy tied the match at 1-1 with 25-16 second set. The third set looked similar to the second where the Mavericks took and early lead but New Haven composed themselves and fought back as Grace Juerges and Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) took control of the attack and Payton Malinoski (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) continued to shine defensively sparking the New Haven run. Down the stretch it was New Haven that pulled away and it was Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) slamming the door with a kill to win the third set 25-18 and go back up 2-1. In the fourth with the lead New Haven looked to slam the door and jumped out to an early lead once again as Mast once again jump started the attack and got things rolling. New Haven forced the Mavericks to burn their timeouts early and a late 7-0 run that saw Sofia Kamke (Santa Catarina, Brazil/Escola Tecnica do Vale do Itajai) have a trio of kills to bring it to set and match point before she sealed the deal with the final kill winning the fourth set 25-15, winning the match 3-1. Kamke had 19 kills in the win as Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) had 45 assists and Malinoski had 19 digs in the win.
