SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – With one match remaining in the regular season, the New Haven women's tennis team continued its dominance of its fall schedule with a 7-0 sweep over American International on Sunday afternoon. With the win, New Haven improves to 8-0 on the season and is guaranteed the top seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship and a first round bye.
The Chargers opened up the action with a doubles sweep in the No. 1 and No. 2 position, surrendering just a single game in doubles action. In the No.1 position the familiar face of Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) was partnered with freshman Leni Bischof (Aigen, Austria/BRG Stainach) with the pair taking a 6-1 victory, while the familiar pairing of Risako Umekuni (Saitama, Japan/Shumei Eiko) and Victoria Togores (Canary Islands, Spain/Colegio Hispano Ingles) shutout their opponent 6-0 in the No. 2 position.
In singles action, four Chargers would close out their matches without surrendering a game to the Yellow Jackets with those 6-0, 6-0 victories coming from Ferrarini at No. 1, Togores at No. 3, Bischof at No. 4 and freshman Elaina Morosky (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) at No. 5 singles.
Rounding out the singles action was Umekuni at the No.2 spot with a 6-0, 6-3 victory while Sneh Dagar (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) took the default victory in the No. 6 position.
New Haven will close out its regular season on Tuesday afternoon when they head to the Granite State and Manchester, N.H. to take on the Southern New Hampshire Penmen. First serve in the conference battle is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Mark A. Oullette Stadium Tennis Courts.
