WEST HAVEN, Conn. – With a goal in the first 12 minutes of the game and another in the final 12 minutes of the game, senior Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova) led the New Haven men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over American International on its home turf at Kathy Zolad Stadium. With the win, New Haven improves to 6-3-1 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
The Chargers leading scorer, Santanach pushed through the defense on a speedy breakaway where he accepted a pass across the box from Albert Porqueras (Barcelona, Spain/IES Jaume Savador I Pedrol) that he one-timed just inside the near post. The play wouldn't have been possible without a forward pass from Luke Fiscella (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) to Porqueras to set up the early goal.
New Haven would take the 1-0 lead into the intermission, holding much of the momentum in the first 45 minutes, closing out the half with a 6-4 lead in the shot column, including two in addition to the goal that forced AIC's keeper Lucas Morales-Fernandez to protect his goal.
Coming out of the intermission, the Yellow Jackets would put the pressure on New Haven and keeper Archie Watts (Bristol, England/SGS College) early but it wouldn't pay off until early in the 78th minute when Pietro Botasso headed in a cross off a corner kick from Nicholas Chapman.
The Chargers would answer right back just 15 seconds later when Santanach struck again, this time accepting a forward pass from Mattia Maiello (Novara, Italy/Liceo Carlo Alberto) at the top of the box. With the AIC keeper coming out to attempt to play the ball, Santanach chased down the pass and caught the keeper out of position, chipping his shot over his head and just under the crossbar in the left corner of the goal.
The Yellow Jackets would again turn up the pressure in the final 10 minutes, closing out the half with seven shots, again only putting two more on goal as Watts finished the game with four total saves. Overall, the Chargers and Yellow Jackets closed out the second half knotted at seven in the shots column, with New Haven ending the night with a 13-11 lead. AIC would manage to lead the way in corner kicks, forcing eight compared to the Chargers one.
New Haven will next take the pitch on the road when they head to Worcester, Mass. to take on the Assumption Greyhounds looking for another three points in the league standings. Opening kickoff against the Greyhounds is set for 4:00 p.m. with all of the action live on NE10 Now on Flo Sports.
