WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Kha'lil Eason (Norwalk, Conn./Brunswick School) opened up the game with a run back of 98 yards to the house and the New Haven football team never looked back as they ran away with a 41-14 win over the Pace Setters to secure a second-straight Northeast-10 Championship. The Chargers become the first conference team to win consecutive league titles since they themselves won three straight in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
With the win, New Haven concludes the regular season with an 8-2 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the NE10 and will now await the potential of a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs. The selection show is scheduled to air live on NCAA.com at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 17.
"I'm excited for the 34 seniors," said head coach Chris Pincince. "They came here four years ago and helped build this thing. They've got three championships among them. They've been to the NCAA playoffs now hopefully four times. We're the only private schools in the country to go to four straight NCAA playoffs and it's a testament to these players."
Leading the Chargers on the day was senior running back Christopher Ais (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) who racked up 136 yards on 11 carries, part of 340 total on the year. The 136 yards for Ais pushes him over the 1,000 mark for the season, his second season with 1,000+ in his career as he moves him into second all-time in rushing yards with 2,948.
"We have so many good running backs here," said Pincince. "He leads the league in rushing and he does it on probably 40 or 50 less carries than everyone else. He's a great kid. An amazing player and I'm excited for him." Â
"It mean's everything to me," said Ais. "I want to thank God. I want to thank the O-Line of course because I wouldn't be able to accomplish any of this without them. This is my third conference championship, my third ring and it mean's everything."
The 136 yards on the day give Ais 1,031 for the season and is his fifth game of the year with 100+ yards.
Aside of Ais, the highlights for the Chargers came on the defensive end as the Blue and Gold finished the day matching his season-high eight sacks racking up 43 yards. Leading the way was graduate linebacker Joe Vitale (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) with a pair, while senior David Abolarinwa (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) followed with 1.5 sacks for a game-high 10 yards.
As a unit, the Chargers defense held its ninth straight team under 100 rushing yards and its fourth team under 50 yards as the Setters finished the day with just 31 net yards, tied for the second lowest on the season matching Franklin Pierce back on September 21. The 31 net yards came despite gaining 90 yards on the ground but losing 59. Â
