CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Despite 110 minutes of action on the field, it would come down to a penalty kick shootout in the Chargers first appearance back in the NCAA Tournament in 40 seasons with the Concord Mountain Lions advancing to Sunday's second round 4-2 in the shoutout. With the 2-2 draw through 110 minutes of play, New Haven concludes its 2024 campaign with a 12-4-4 overall record, the first season with double digit victories since the 2000 campaign which ended with a 12-6-2 mark.
Split by the halftime break, New Haven saw its two goals come five minutes apart with the first knotting the score at one as David Maiello connected with an assist from Sandro Branquinho (Covilha, Portugal/Wright State) sending the shot to the high right corner to put the Chargers on the board.
After taking that 1-1 draw into the halftime intermission, the Chargers wasted no time adding the second goal of the day, scoring just 33 seconds after the restart. This time around it was Gianluca Trastulli (Rome, Italy/San Giovanni Evangelista) finding the back of the net with Mattia Maiello (Novara, Italy/Liceo Carlo Alberto) providing the assist.
New Haven had a pair of scoring attempts in the first overtime period, including one from Albert Portas (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Sust) with less than 10 seconds remaining which nearly ended the contest. Portas had both of the Chargers attempts in the first extra period.
In the second OT, the Chargers again had a pair of looks at goals with Trastulli and Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova) each credited with the shots. On the flip side, the Mountain Lions sent four shots in, two of which were corralled by Archie Watts (Bristol, England/SGS College), with two of those shots in the a final minute flurry, the last of which Watts controlled for his sixth save of the day. His counterpart for Concord, Nathan Cargill finished with nine saves. Overall for the contest, Concord led in the shot column 23-9.
