Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Patience Pays Off, Santanach Strikes Late in Regular Season Finale Win

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – In a game that didn't see a ton of action in front of either goal, the University of New Haven men's soccer team took advantage of one of just a few opportunities with senior Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova) scoring the lone tally of the night late in the contest to lead the Chargers to a 1-0 road win. With the victory, New Haven closes out the regular season with a 10-3-3 overall record and a mark of 5-2-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

With the result, New Haven picked up a crucial three points in the standings and locked up the No. 2 seed, after missing out on the conference championship last season. The Chargers will open up NE10 postseason action on Saturday hosting No. 7 Saint Michael's in first round action at Kathy Zolad Stadium. All of the action is set for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff and will be carried live on NE10 Now on Flo College.

After more than 87 and a half minutes of scoreless action, the scoring play for the Chargers began deep in their own zone when Daniel Ehlin (Kalmar, Sweden/Stagneliusskolan) had a defensive takeaway not far outside of the 18-yard box in front of Chargers keeper Archie Watts (Bristol, England/SGS College). Ehlin dribbled forward about 25 yards before firing a deep pass into the Panthers defensive zone where Santanach chased it down 10 yards outside the Adelphi 18-yard box.

Santanach knocked down the pass, dribbled into the box where he eluded a sliding defender and fired a shot to the opposite corner with the keeper coming out to try and play the ball but unable to make the leaping stop to his left. The goal for Santanach extended his team lead in that column as he wraps up the regular season with seven goals.

Overall for the game, New Haven trailed the Panthers 10-9 in the shot column but led the way with six of their nine shots marked on goal, while Adelphi managed just for on goal with Watts closing out his eighth shutout of the season with four saves.
